Panthers knock off Tigers, 6-4, in Section 3A tangle
LUVERNE -- David Schmidt struck out seven batters and allowed just five hits and three walks in a complete-game effort to help the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers defeat Springfield, 6-4 Tuesday evening in Section 3A baseball playoff action.
Springfield's Christian Loomis also tossed a complete game, fanning five batters and allowing only three earned runs.
Springfield (8-13) scored the game's first run in the bottom of the first, as Luke Amsden walked, stole second and was plated by Tyler Stark's single to left.
T-M-B (17-4) tied the game with a run in the second, with Eric Lanoue reaching on a fielder's choice and scoring after a pair of Tiger errors.
Each team scored once in the third, as T-M-B's Brian Schlager hit a sacrifice fly to score Isaac Dolan, and Stark drove in Amsden with another RBI-single for Springfield.
T-M-B scored the next three runs to take a 5-2 lead, as Taylor Hagberg singled and later scored on a throwing error in the fourth.
Schlager (double) and Aaron Frisvold (triple) stroked back-to-back extra-base hits to give the Panthers their first run in the fifth, and Hagberg later plated courtesy-runner Adam Baumann with a sacrifice fly to put T-M-B up by three runs.
Springfield's Trevor Krebs drove in Ryan Cook with a single in the bottom of the fifth to slice the Panthers' lead to 5-3, and each team scored once in the seventh to make the final score 6-4.
Schlager, Hagberg, Schmidt and Frisvold each had two hits for T-M-B, while Lanoue, Isaac Dolan and Anthony Dolan each had a hit.
Krebs and Stark each had two hits, while Amsden had the only other hit for Springfield.
