PIPESTONE -- What started as a community effort to bring awareness to women in the area is now an annual event in Pipestone.

Coordinators for the Women's Expo, Reggie Gorter and Debbie Reinert, are looking forward to a "healthy crowd" at the second annual event.

Attendees will be able to scour a variety of vendor and health-related booths, watch fitness demonstrations and listen to several health care and nutrition presentations.

Gorter explained it was important to consider the demographics of the community when they decided on the presentation topics.

"Dr. (Michael) Lastine from Pipestone Medical Center will be talking about vegan nutrition and how it relates to not eating meat," she said. "We're also having the Pipestone County Pork Producers doing a cooking demonstration on a healthy way to cook pork. This is where we live so we have to try to represent everyone that lives here."

The goal of the expo is to create health awareness among women, but in a fun environment, Gorter said.

"We want to give women a chance to do something specifically for themselves," Reinert added. "We're always the caregivers but don't have time to take care of ourselves."

New to Saturday's expo is a Silver Sneakers exercise demonstration for seniors, Gorter said.

She will be leading Silver Sneakers and yoga.

Another addition is the Zumba demonstration -- a Latin-inspired fitness program.

Pipestone County Medical Center representatives from cardiac rehab, rehab, radiology and obstetrics will be on-site for question-answer sessions and further information about the services offered.

"A presentation I'll be doing with another physical therapist is called 'The Most Important Exercise for Women of All Ages,'" Reinert said about the upcoming session on the importance of pelvic floor muscles.

The expo will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Peace United Methodist Church.

The Women's Expo is sponsored by the Pipestone County Medical Center, Peace Parish Nursing Cooperative and Peace United Methodist Church Nurse Program.
