Postponements: Athletic events called off through Monday

WORTHINGTON — The winter break for area athletic teams just got a little longer.

Blustery winter weather forced the postponement of the majority of southwest Minnesota’s Friday high school sporting events, and some of Saturday’s events were also called off. Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton declared all of the state’s public schools closed on Monday due to predicted bad weather, meaning more of Monday’s scheduled events were also affected.

For Worthington High School, the Worthington at Pipestone Area junior varsity and middle school wrestling matches were canceled.

The following Monday events were postponed or canceled as of Friday afternoon:

n Middle school girls and boys basketball was moved from Monday to Tuesday, Jan. 7. The middle school girls will travel to Southwestern United with the seventh grade playing at 4:30 p.m. followed by the eighth grade.

n Middle school wrestling at St. James was canceled.

n Junior varsity and varsity girls basketball in Worthington against Fulda was postponed from Monday to Jan. 23

n Ninth grade girls and boys basketball at Windom was postponed from Monday to Feb. 7.

Several of the area’s varsity events scheduled for Friday were postponed to specific dates. Among them:

n Redwood Valley at Worthington gymnastics was moved to Jan. 27

n Long Prairie-Grey Eagle/Wadena-Deer Creek at Luverne girls hockey was moved to Jan. 11.

n Windom Area at Marshall girls basketball and boys basketball was moved to Jan. 20.

n Fulda at Adrian boys basketball was moved to Jan. 30.

n Southwestern United at Edgerton boys basketball was moved to Jan. 27.

n Westbrook-Walnut Grove at Hills-Beaver Creek boys basketball was moved to Jan. 11.

n Ellsworth at Red Rock Central boys basketball was moved to Jan. 10.
