Pregnancy center to host fundraiser

WORTHINGTON — The Helping Hand Pregnancy Center will host its annual fundraising event from 6:15 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at American Reformed Church, Worthington.

With the combined theme of “Dare to Hope” and “Celebrating Birthdays,” Helping Hand is raising money to continue its services in the community.

“I like to say that we make birthdays happen, because without life there are no birthdays,” said Susan Voehl, executive director at Helping Hand Pregnancy Center. “Since we’re a nonprofit organization, we do rely on generous gifts and donations. People come from all over the region for our services, and I think we’re an important organization to the community.”

Sara Renner, who Voehl said is returning to the annual event by popular demand, will perform and a gourmet meal will be served. There will also be a silent auction with more than 30 items up for bid. One of the items up for auction — a renovated entertainment center made into a children’s play kitchen — was created by one of Helping Hand’s own counselors. “Instead of going with a caterer this year, we went with a cook,” Voehl said. “So the meal will be home-cooked, and this makes it easier for anyone who plans to come at the last minute. All are welcomed.”

Since 1990, Helping Hand Pregnancy Center has offered free pregnancy tests, counseling and support throughout a woman’s entire pregnancy and afterward.

“We hear all the time from women that if they just had that one person supporting them and saying that everything will be OK, then they would have chosen life,” Voehl said. “We are that one person.

“We’re a very positive and optimistic group here,” she added. “All of us here have had a past, and so we understand. We like to say that we have turned our messes into messages.”

The fundraiser promises to be an upbeat, happy evening that celebrates life and the services at Helping Hand.

“We just want everyone to know that this is a positive night, and we hope for a big turnout,” Voehl said.

Helping Hand is also taking donations of new or gently used infant clothing and baby equipment, which can be donated directly to the center, located at 910 Third Ave. in Worthington.

Helping Hand will take RSVPs for the fundraiser until the day of the event. For more information, call 372-2111.
