Prep baseball: Eagles split, Adrian swept at Windom Tournament
WINDOM — Windom Area split two games at its home tournament on Saturday with a win over Blue Earth Area and a shutout loss to a tough Fairmont squad.
The Eagles opened the day with a 9-6 win over the Buccaneers before running into one of the top-ranked squads in the state and taking a 5-0 loss to settle for the split.
In the opener, the home team put up five runs in the second inning to grab hold of a 6-1 advantage. That lead grew to 7-1 before BEA scored a pair in the sixth to slice into the lead. Windom scored in each of the last two innings to hold the Bucs at bay.
Jack Mellstrom picked up the win for Windom as he went all seven innings and allowed just three earned runs while striking out three. Sam Huska was 3-for-3 with two runs and two batted in. Bryton Syverson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs with Andrew Larson and Jacob Gotto both smacking two hits.
Windom’s Joe Wieneke and Matt Lytle of Fairmont battled it out in a pitcher’s duel for four innings before the Cardinals finally made some noise in the top of the fifth.
Fairmont scored four runs in the inning, which was plenty for Lytle as he fired a six-hit shutout.
Weineke took the hard-luck loss, after allowing just four runs on five hits. Mellstrom was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the offensive attack.
