Prep baseball: Luverne edges Adrian in eight
ADRIAN — A little bit of irony occurred Monday in the first baseball game of the season for the Adrian Dragons and Luverne Cardinals.
After not having walked a batter through seven innings, the Dragons issued four free passes in the eighth as visiting Luverne scored twice to secure a 5-3 victory.
Veteran AHS head coach Kevin Nowotny, however, did not protest too much. “I think they’re one of the better teams in the area this year. If we can play with them, I think we can play with anybody,” Nowotny said.
Luverne led 3-0 until Adrian scored its initial run in the fourth inning. Two more crossed the plate in the bottom of the sixth as Luverne walked two and made an error.
With the score knotted at 3-3 in the seventh, Adrian looked ready to rally. Jordan Dingmann reached on a walk and was bunted to second base with the meat of the batting order coming up. But the No. 3 hitter in the batting order flew out to shortstop and the No. 4 hitter struck out.
Tommy Vajgrt pitched the seventh and eighth innings for Luverne and was credited with the victory. Michael Preuss took the loss for Adrian after hurling the seventh and the eighth.
Zane Hiller started for LHS. Logan Norman and Connor Hoffman also saw mound action. Jordan Bertrand started for Adrian. Ian Ruppert, Brady Lonneman, Tony Sieve and Cody Polzine also pitched for the Dragons before Preuss came on.
Kendall Meyer went 2-for-4 at the plate for Luverne while teammates Connor Crabtree and Hiller also had two hits. Crabtree and Hiller each collected a double.
Tony Sieve plated both of Adrian’s sixth-inning runs on a two-run single.
Adrian is at Mountain Lake Area today. Luverne hosts Pipestone Area.
