Prep baseball: Luverne splits battle of conference contenders

LUVERNE — In a battle between two of the top Southwest Conference teams, Luverne took the opener 10-1 but Marshall came back in the nightcap 7-1.

Josh Slieter pitched seven full innings in the first game, checking the Tigers on three hits while walking two and striking out 10. Carl Douglas took the loss.

Connor Hoffman went 4-for-4 with a double to lead the Cardinals. Slieter, Kendall Meyer and Tommy Vajgrt all had two hits.

In the second game Drew Hmieleski went the distance for Marshall, stopping Luverne on five hits and striking out nine. Gunnar Olson took the loss for Luverne, which committed seven errors.

Hmieleski was 3-for-4 at the plate.

Luverne is 12-3 overall and 9-1 in conference play, with only single conference games left with Windom Area and Worthington. Marshall also has just one conference loss.

JCC 2, Worthington 1

JACKSON — Josh Christoffer singled home Peter Nasby in the bottom of the sixth inning for what became the winning run as Jackson County Central edged Worthington in a Southwest Conference clash. In the seventh, the Trojans had a runner on second base when the Huskies’ Andrew Hesse made a diving catch in shallow right field to end the game.

Chris Gumto pitched five-plus innings and picked up the victory, striking out eight Trojans. Ryan Lee pitched a solid game for Worthington and took the loss.

Windom Area 4, RV 2

WINDOM — Seven starters hit safely and starting pitcher Jack Mellstrom hurled five and two-thirds strong innings as the Windom Eagles dispatched Redwood Valley 4-2 Tuesday in a Southwest Conference game.

Andrew Larson had two hits for the Eagles, including a double. Teammate Bryton Syverson tripled.

Sam Huska pitched the final one and one-third innings and kept the Cardinals hitless, picking up the save.

Jordan Opdahl, the losing pitcher, had three of the Cardinals’ five hits.

WESTBROOK — Taylor Bunting pitched a four-hitter and got some timely help from his teammates at the plate as Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove defeated Southwestern United 4-1.

Cole Pankonin was 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles. Mitchell Jarmer was 2-for-2, also with two doubles for RRC/W-WG. Matt Otto drove in two runs for the winners, now 3-5 on the season.

Bunting walked two and struck out 10. The only run he allowed was unearned.

Aaron Fest went the distance for Southwestern United.

E/SWC 6, Adrian 3

ADRIAN — A solid pitching performance by Edgerton/Southwest Christian’s Wyat Butson and a poor defensive showing by Adrian resulted in a 6-3 decision. Butson pitched five and one-third innings and struck out six batters to get the mound victory. Adrian committed 12 errors in the contest.

The Dragons also had difficulty at the plate in key moments. Twice they had the bases loaded with one out and both times struck out twice to end the threat.

Jordan Bertrand hurled seven complete innings for Adrian, and all of the six runs he allowed were unearned. He struck out nine.

Luke Nibbelink came on with the bases loaded in the fifth inning and got out of the jam. He finished to get the save, striking out seven in his short stint.

Tyus Janssen and Luke Drooger both had a pair of hits for E/SWC.

SLAYTON — Mountain Lake Area scored five second inning runs, and that was all the Wolverines needed as they beat Murray County Central.

Nathan Adrian and Levi Kass had two hits apiece for MLA. Erik Winter tripled and drove in a run, Carter Kirk doubled and drove in another, and Austin Nathan had a double and an RBI.

Nick Petersen and Noah Lupkes both had a pair of hits for Murray County Central. Lupkes hit a double and drove in a run.

Andrew Hirsch was the winning pitcher. Paul Mesner took the loss.

MCC is 7-4 overall. M la is 8-5 overall.
