ADRIAN -- It didn't take long for Luverne's baseball team to shake off the early-season rust.

The Cardinals exploded for 17 runs, including seven in the seventh inning, on Friday en route to a 17-6 victory over Adrian in their season opener.


Brent Dinger hit a two-run home run, and Tanner Skattum added a solo shot for the Cardinals (1-0), who trailed 5-4 before a four-run fourth inning put them ahead for good.

Zack Clark and Trever Stoffel each had three singles, and Phil Paquette recorded a single and two doubles for Luverne, which is scheduled to face Pipestone Area on Tuesday.

Tanner Loosbrock had a three-run home run, a double and five RBI to lead the Dragons (1-1), who are scheduled to host Tracy-Milroy-Balaton on Tuesday. Chase Mangel had two doubles, and Adam Diekmann drew four walks for Adrian.

Paquette allowed five runs on six hits and struck out three in four innings to earn the win, and Zach Olson allowed one run on one hit over the final three innings.

Jordon Kontz allowed 10 runs -- six earned -- on 10 hits and struck out five in six innings for Adrian.

WELCOME -- Tyler Rettig starred on the mound and at the plate Friday to help Jackson County Central defeat Martin County West and earn its first win of the season.

Rettig, a senior, allowed two runs on five hits and struck out six in five innings to earn the win. He also had three hits and four RBI.

MCW scored twice in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a one-run lead, but Rettig responded in the top of the fifth with a three-run home run.

Joshua Wacker went 3-for-4, and Brock Thaemlitz allowed one hit in two scoreless innings of relief to seal the victory for the Huskies (1-1), who are scheduled to host Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin on Tuesday.

Nich Dorschner and Jonathon Traetow each went 2-for-3 to lead the Mavericks.

SAINT JAMES -- St. James scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning Friday to earn a one-run victory over Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

Brian Benedict allowed two runs and didn't issue a walk in 5 2/3 innings but suffered the loss.

Zach Siemer went 1-for-2 with an RBI to lead the Falcons, who scored twice in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead.

The Saints evened the score with a run in the fifth, and the Falcons scored once in the top of the sixth to regain a one-run advantage, but the Saints sealed the win with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

The Falcons, who struck out 13 times in the game, are scheduled to face BOLD on the road Monday.

SLEEPY EYE -- Sydney Remus hit a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning Friday to lead the Indians to a dramatic victory over the Mountain Lake/Butterfield-Odin Wolverines.

The Wolverines scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to even the score, and starting pitcher Brittany Wenner recorded two quick outs to start the bottom of the frame. But Remus, a freshman, ended the game on the first pitch of her at-bat.

Wenner, a senior, allowed eight runs -- three earned -- on seven hits, walked four and struck out one in a complete-game effort.

Macy Svalland went 1-for-4 with two runs, and Megan Svalland went 1-for-2 with a run and three RBI to lead the Wolverines (0-2), who are scheduled to host Jackson County Central on Tuesday.

Brianna Wenner went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI for ML/B-O.
