PREP BASKETBALL: Westbrook-Walnut Grove tops Ellsworth in double-overtime thriller

WESTBROOK -- The Westbrook-Walnut Grove Chargers went 6 of 6 from the free-throw line in double-overtime to defeat the Ellsworth Panthers 66-65 during a Red Rock Conference boys' basketball game Saturday.

The Chargers led by 12 after the first half, but allowed the Panthers to tie the game at 46 to force overtime. Ellsworth took the lead in the overtime period, but W-WG was able to notch a last second shot to for a second overtime.

Taylor Lindaman led the Chargers with 19 points, while Alex Knutson added 17 points and nine rebounds. Aaron Hass pitched in 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Panthers were led by Justin Kruse, Daniel Kramer and Cole Meester, who all picked up 12 points in the game.

W-WG (6-9, 3-5) travels to Okabena to take on the Southwestern United Wildcats, while Ellsworth (6-10, 5-4) takes on the Trojans in Worthington.

Luverne 80, St. James 61

ST. JAMES -- Brett Heronimus led the Luverne Cardinals to a win over St. James Saturday with 16 points, nine rebounds and six assists.

The Cardinals led by seven at halftime, but used a 40-point second half to extend their lead to 19 by the end of the game. Luverne out-rebounded St. James 37-17 in the game.

Matthew Overgaard led Luverne in scoring with 23 points to go along with five rebounds, while Matthew Arends had 18 points and six rebounds.

Ryan Menssen had a team-high 19 points for St. James, while Zach Brandts had 18 points.

Luverne (11-5) hosts Pipestone Tuesday.

Southwest Christian 77, Adrian 35

ADRIAN -- Leighton Sampson had 17 points and eight rebounds for the Southwest Christian Eagles in a win over the Adrian Dragons Saturday.

Southwest Christian used 28 turnovers by Adrian to control the game and limit the Dragons to just 35 points in the game.

Eric Talsma and Gabe Vander Veen both picked up 12 points in the game for the Eagles, while Vander Veen added eight rebounds and four steals. Kaleb Schelhaas led the team in assists with six.

Adrian was led by Nick Reyne, who picked up a double-double (16 points, 11 rebounds) to go along with Taylor Recker's 10 points. Brady Lonneman had seven rebounds in the game.

The Eagles (13-1, 8-0) host Ellsworth Tuesday, while Adrian (0-17, 0-9) hosts Southwestern United Friday.

Central Lyon 56,

Trinity Christian 48

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa -- Nic Lutmer dropped 23 points and nabbed nine rebounds to power the Central Lyon Lions past Trinity Christian Saturday.

The Lions went 15 of 17 from the free-throw line in the game to help hold off Trinity Christian.

Grant Metzger added 13 points for the Lions.

Greg and Brad Gritters both had 15 points for Trinity Christian on the day.

Central Lyon (8-10) takes on Sibley-Ocheyedan Tuesday in the second game of a boys/girls doubleheader.

ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa -- Kori Schulte was a perfect 10 of 10 from the field and 3 of 3 from the free-throw line for 23 points for the Central Lyon Lions in a win over Trinity Christian Saturday.

The Lions led 33-17 at halftime and outscored Trinity Christian 35-18 in the second to take the win.

Lexi Ackerman picked up 17 points and eight assists for Central Lyon to go along with 10 points from Kelsey Ackerman.

The Lions (17-2, 13-2) host Sibley-Ocheyedan Tuesday in the first game of a boys/girls doubleheader.
