PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Eagles, Wolverines kick off state tourney Thursday
MINNEAPOLIS -- After winning their respective Class A section championships, the Southwest Christian Eagles and the Mountain Lake Area Wolverines are gearing up for a state tournament run starting Thursday at Williams Arena on the campus of the University of Minnesota.
No. 3-seed Southwest Christian (27-1) puts its 23-game win streak on the line against the unranked Walker-Hackensack-Akeley Wolves (27-2) at 5 p.m. Thursday at Williams Arena. The Eagles swept the Section 3 tournament, taking down Dawson-Boyd in the championship game by a score of 57-48.
The Wolves found their way to the state tournament after taking down Northern Freeze 58-38 to win their 16th straight game Friday.
The winner of this matchup moves on to face the winner of No. 2 Upsala and Battle Lake at 2 p.m. Friday at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
Mountain Lake Area (24-5) did not receive a top-five seed in the state tournament and will face the No. 1-seed Maranatha Christian Academy Mustangs (29-1) at 11 a.m. Thursday at Williams Arena. The Wolverines won the Section 2 title with a 65-30 over Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity Friday.
The Mustangs come into the state tournament on a 16-game win streak after rolling through the Section 4 tournament, defeating their opponents by at least 10 points in all four section games.
The winner of this game moves on to the semifinals to play the winner of No. 4 Rushford-Peterson and No. 5 Lakeview Christian Academy at noon Friday at the Target Center.
The winners of Friday's games advance to the state championship game at noon Saturday at the Target Center. The semifinal losers drop down to the third place game at 10 p.m. Saturday at Concordia University in St. Paul.
