PREP BOYS BASKETBALL: Orabs dominate Generals
Worthington Minnesota 300 11th Street / P.O. Box 639 56187

SHELDON, Iowa -- The man-to-man defense of Class 2A sixth-ranked Sheldon was too much for Sibley-Ocheyedan to overcome.

The Orabs (12-1 overall, 9-1 Siouxland Conference) remained atop the league standings after a 71-31 thrashing of the Generals (0-10, 0-10) on Friday.

Entering Friday, the Orabs were tied for first place with MOC-Floyd Valley in the Siouxland Conference standings. The result of the Dutchmen's game against Central Lyon was unavailable before press time.

Sheldon led 18-14 after one quarter before scoring the next 18 points over the game's next 9½ minutes.

Dallas Ennema, a 6-foot-7 senior forward, had nine of his game-high 20 points during the Orabs' 16-0 second-quarter run that gave Sheldon a 20-point lead (34-14) at halftime.

"We played good defense and pushed the ball up the floor in the second quarter," Sheldon head coach Claude Struve said. "Sibley-Ocheyedan didn't score in the second quarter, partly because of our defense and partly because they struggled."

Grant Juber, who topped Sibley-Ocheyedan with 13 points, ended the General's scoring drought on a basket 48 seconds into the second half. He had S-O's final field goal of the first quarter, cutting the Orabs' lead to 18-14 with 30 seconds left.

It was all Sheldon after that.

Ennema sparked the Orabs' outburst with an old-fashioned 3-point play with 7½ minutes left in the first half. He scored another basket before Matt Dykstra (nine points) added a field goal.

After another old-fashioned 3-point play -- this time from Nathan Oostra (11 points) -- Sheldon led 28-14 midway with 3:59 left in the first half. Then, Ennema picked off a bad pass and finished in transition with a two-handed dunk before the run continued on layups from Oostra and Ennema.

"As a team, we're just really working hard and making sure that we are rotating with the ball and getting ball-pressure," Ennema said. "The ball-pressure was very good tonight and Nathan Oostra was (guarding) in the face of Juber, who was their key offensive player."

James Gradert, a 6-8 senior forward, who finished with eight points, knocked down a Sheldon layup 16 seconds into the second half to increase the lead to 36-14. But Juber answered with a basket, ending the Orabs' run at the 7:12 mark of the third quarter.

The Generals, who were outscored 39-7 in the middle quarters, could do little to stop Sheldon. With 3:36 left in the third quarter, Ennema drove the baseline for another two-handed jam as the Orabs built a 57-21 lead after 24 minutes.

Juber scored nine of his 13 points in the first quarter, hitting a trio of 3-pointers to keep Sibley-Ocheyedan close.

Ty Hanna added five points to become the Generals' second-leading scorer.

Hunter McDonald chipped in eight points for Sheldon.
