PREP BOYS HOCKEY: Luverne holds off Minnehaha Academy for 2-1 win
MINNEAPOLIS -- Gunnar Olson scored the eventual game-winning goal on the power play to give the Luverne Cardinals a 2-1 victory over Minnehaha Academy Friday.
Skyler Wenninger opened up the scoring for the Cardinals 2 minutes, 34 seconds into the first period on an unassisted goal to make it 1-0.
Olson scored Luverne's second goal halfway through the second period on the power play to put the Cardinals up by two with half a game left to play.
Minnehaha Academy got on the board with a goal of their own late in the second to cut Luverne's lead to one. Ryan Leo scored the goal on a power play with seven seconds left in the period.
Kendall Meyer got the win in net for Luverne, stopping 18 of 19 shots he faced. Minnehaha Academy's Matt Sawyer saw 36 shots on net, saving 34.
The Cardinals (21-4) host the winner of the Worthington/Fairmont game Thursday in the second round of the Section 3A Boys Hockey Tournament.
