PREP BOYS HOCKEY: Tigers take down Cardinals
ST. PETER -- Quinn Horvath scored twice for the Marshall Tigers to knock off the top-seeded Luverne Cardinals 5-3 in the semifinals Class A Section 3 Boys' Hockey Tournament Saturday at Gustavus Adolphus College.
The Cardinals struck first on a goal by Logan Norman, but the Tigers answered right back with a tally by Tyler Untiedt less than 2 minutes later to tie the game at one late in the first period.
Luverne outshot the Tigers 18-8 in the second period, but Marshall would score twice in the second to make it 3-1 on goals from Horvath and Corey Clark (power-play goal).
The Cardinals cut the Tigers lead to one on a power-play goal by Skyler Wenninger early in the third, but Marshall answered back again with two goals of its own to make it 5-2.
Jordan Dingmann scored late in the third to make it 5-3, but the Cardinals were unable to complete the comeback.
Kendall Meyer made 15 saves on 20 shots for Luverne, while Mason Campion stopped 39 shots out of 42 that the Cardinals sent his way.
The Tigers move on to the section championship game Wednesday, where they will face No. 6 Hutchinson, who upset No. 2 New Ulm Saturday by a 3-2 margin.
