FAIRMONT -- Monday's game against Fairmont couldn't have started any better for the Worthington boys' soccer team.

After a few quick touches, Trojan forward Thun Lay received the ball 14 seconds into the game and scored to give WHS the early momentum in the contest.

However, the Cardinals clawed back to tie the game and came out as the 3-2 victors after overtime.

"The kids played pretty well," WHS head coach Vilath Lovan said. "The first goal surprised me, it was awesome, they just took a couple of touches and they scored right away."

The Trojans received a number of other scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes, but lacked the finishing touch to extend their lead.

Fairmont knotted the score at 1-1 after receiving a penalty kick for a Worthington hand ball in its own penalty area.

The score remained tied at half time, but both teams scored in the second half to make the score 2-2 at the end of regulation.

The Cardinals' goal came on a long-range shot that skipped on the ground past WHS goalkeeper Ricardo Maldonado, while the Trojans' goal came from Jared Kinley on a rebound after Diego Esquivel dribbled up the right-hand side all the way to the goal mouth and attempted to slip the ball inside the right-hand post.

Esquivel set up a shot by Angel Sanchez after another similar drive, but Sanchez's shot was not on target.

Fairmont scored in overtime on a play where Maldonado appeared to have the right of way in a contest for the ball with an FHS player, but no foul was called as the Cardinal attacker won the ball and converted for the decisive score.

"Overall they did good," Lovan said. "It was just bad luck, it didn't go our way. We could have finished them right away, we just kept letting them hang on."

Worthington (9-3) will host Mankato Loyola tonight in the last game of the regular season. The game will serve as both the team's Parents Night and Meet the Trojans Night.

Worthington 1 1 0 -- 2

Fairmont 1 1 1 -- 3
