Prep cross country: Schandelmeier wins at Canby meet
CANBY — Luverne sophomore Madison Schandelmeier, Minnesota’s fourth-ranked Class A girls’ cross country, lived up to her pre-season billing Friday when she blazed a winning time of 14:47 at the Canby Country Club.
Running in the darkness and rain, runners from 12 teams competed in the six-race event, dubbed as the First Annual Canby Late Night Invite. Due to the wet conditions at the end of the varsity boys’ race, complete results for that event were not available at press time.
Marshall won the varsity girls’ team title with a low score of 36 points, followed by Sioux Falls Washington (70), Luverne (90), Canby/Minneota (99), Redwood Valley (114), Watertown S.D. (162), Worthington (194), Tracy-Milroy-Balaton (197), Lakeview (248) and Murray County Central (272).
Worthington was paced by the 14th-place performance of junior Meredith Moore (16:50). With Alicia Darling sidelined with an injury, Olivia Ebbers was the next Trojan to enter the chute, placing 34th with a time of 18:16, followed by Jessica Darling (40th, 18:35), Maria Contreras (53, 19:54), Brianna Newman (54, 20:03), Kacey Contreras (58, 21:26) and Christine McGrane (62, 23:56).
