Prep football: Central Lyon/G-LR takes long road trip for first round Wednesday
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa — Despite finishing third in its district this season, Central Lyon-George-Little Rock’s football team is poised to do its best in the postseason.
In Iowa, the top two seeds from each district qualify for home games the first round of postseason play. Finishing third, behind Sioux Center and Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley, the Lions will travel Wednesday to South Central Calhoun.
SCC plays its home games in Lake City. The school is a consolidation of the former Rockwell City-Lytton and Southern Cal school districts.
The Titans finished their regular season last Friday with a 27-21 win at East Sac County. The team’s four losses have come to Manson-NW Webster, Humboldt, Kuemper Catholic, and Spirit Lake. Only two of the losses came in district play.
Senior signal-caller Jake Petzenhauser leads his team’s multi-look offense at SCC. The 5-11 152-pounder has a dozen touchdown passes to his credit. Jeff King leads the team with 73 rushes for 344 yards and five touchdowns. Petzenhauser has rushed for four scores.
SCC sophomore Cyle King has caught five touchdowns on 17 catches and senior Jace Neubaum has three. The Titans also boast a special teams unit that has 582 yards in kick returns, a figure that led their district.
The Lions could secure a rematch with their district champion with a win Wednesday. Sioux Center hosts Forest City on the opposite side of the bracket. Second round games are Monday, Nov. 4 at sites to be determined.
CL/G-LR finishes its regular season at 6-3 following a loss last week at B-H/RV.
