Prep football: Edgerton/Ellsworth gets it done against MLA
By AARON HAGEN
EDGERTON — If Bailey Fey was nervous for his first varsity start, he didn’t let it show on the field.
“I watched quite a bit of film the last couple of days,” Fey said, who admitted he was a little nervous before the game.
Fey finished with 218 yards passing, including two touchdowns, and ran for another as E/E compiled 438 yards of total offense.
“(Bailey) did a great job,” E/E Andrew Fleischman said. “He handled himself well, especially in some of the conditions. He really threw a lot of beautiful balls, and didn’t always have something to show for it, but he did a great job. He handled our offense well. We just have to keep building. The nice thing about him is he’s going to come back tomorrow and we’re going to get better.”A year ago, Mountain Lake Area defeated E/E twice en route to a season that finished at the state tournament. This year, the Dutchmen wanted to make sure history didn’t repeat itself.“It was awesome,” Fey said. “Anytime you can get revenge for those two losses last year, it’s pretty sweet.”Senior Tyler Kurrasch said this game was an important one.“It was big,” he said. “Every day in the weight room and everything about tonight was big. “It was a little sloppy, but we did what we needed to do to get the win.”Neither team got off to a quick start. It wasn’t until a 43-yard strike from Fey to Andy Menning that the Dutchmen were able to threaten.Fey capped the drive with a 1-yard scramble and he connected with Menning for a 2-point conversion, giving E/E the first-quarter lead. The Dutchmen defense stalled the MLA offense on its first drive of the second quarter. Following a failed MLA fake punt on fourth down, the Dutchmen needed only one play to capitalize.Fey threw a 44-yard touchdown to Mason Sluis, pushing the E/E lead to 14-0.“We have a lot of respect for Mountain Lake,” Fleischman said. “They are a good team. They are well coached and they have a lot of good players. We were lucky, we just made a couple more plays than they did.”Following halftime, E/E went on its longest drive of the game. Taking the kickoff and using 12 plays to chew up 73 yards, the Dutchmen methodically moved down the field. Fey finished the drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Tate Post, giving E/E a 20-0 lead.“We have a lot of guy who can catch the ball and score,” Fey said. Menning led the receivers with 116 yards on four receptions.MLA scored its long touchdown early in the fourth quarter as Levi Stoesz threw a 16-yard touchdown to Chris Boyd. Logan Johnson ran in the 2-point conversion.Menning fell on a fumble in the end zone in the final minutes of the game, giving the final 20-point spread.“You have to credit Edgerton/Ellsworth,” MLA head coach Tim Kirk said. “They are well coached. Our line got beat hard, so hopefully that leaves a bad taste in their mouth. But credit Edgerton/Ellsworth, they were hungry and outplayed us. They are going to be very good too by the end of the year.”Kurrasch finished with 102 yards on 17 carries for E/E, while Ashton Roskamp had 34 yards for the E/E team that had 220 yards rushing and 218 yards passing.Trevor Van Dyke finished with 10 tackles, while Menning and Jake Huisken each had five tackles and a sack.“We had a good run defense,” Kurrasch said. “Pass coverage needs a little bit of work, but we should be good.”Stoesz had 124 yards passing. However, the Wolverines were limited to 13 yards rushing. And while the Dutchmen were happy with the victory, Fey said he knows they can get better.“We left a lot out there,” he said. “We’d like to clean that up a little bit. We just have to get back to practice and do it, stay humble and stay hungry like (Fleischman) said.”MLA hosts Hills-Beaver Creek next week, while E/E hopes to keep the momentum going at Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman.“No matter who you play the first game, all your time in the weight room, all the time working in practices an camps, you are so focused on that first game,” Fleischman said. “It’s so nice to see all of our kids’ hard work pay off against a very good team.”MLA 0 0 0 8 — 8E/E 8 6 6 8 — 28
