PREP FOOTBALL: Rabbits run past SWU Wildcats Saturday, 39-8
WABASSO -- Aided by a pair of long pass completions from Justin Jass to Jameson Collin, the Southwestern United Wildcats put together a sustained, seven-play, 67-yard drive in the first quarter at Wabasso Saturday afternoon in a Southern Minnesota Conference high school football game.
Jass, who completed 11 of 21 passes in the game for 188 yards, connected with Collin (four catches, 88 yards) on a 31-yard gain and on a 28-yard strike to move the chains twice.
SWU's Luke Henkels capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown run and then also ran across the goal line for the two-point conversion, as the Wildcats tied the score at 8-8 with 4:30 to play in the first quarter.
The Rabbits, however, scored 31 unanswered points -- including 21 in the second quarter -- to earn a 39-8 victory in their Homecoming game.
Wabasso (3-2) finished with 314 yards rushing and another 80 yards passing as Mitch Rohlik completed six of his 11 throws.
SWU's Kyle Elder caught three passes for 67 yards, including a 26-yarder and a 32-yard gain on a Wildcat fourth-quarter drive, while Jass and Collin hooked up again on a 21-yard completion on a later drive.
However, the Wildcats (0-5) were unable to score on either of those marches, as Wabasso's defense held both times.
Erik Jass caught three passes for 29 yards and Austin Rossow had a pair of fourth-quarter tackles for loss to help spark SWU, which was able to muster only 33 yards rushing on 23 carries in the game.
The Wildcats play Red Rock Central at Lamberton Friday night.
