Prep Football Roundup: Merrick, Comnick each run for 100 yards to lead W-WG past G-H-EC/ML
WESTBROOK -- The one-two rushing punch of Josh Merrick and Mason Comnick proved too much for Granada-Huntley-East Chain-Martin Luther Friday night, and host Westbrook-Walnut Grove shut down a high-powered Mustang offense in a 27-7 victory.
Merrick carried 19 times for 117 yards and one touchdown, while Comnick had 21 carries for 115 yards and one score on the ground to go along with one through the air.
W-WG quarterback Derek Eichner (7-of-14 passing, 100 yards) opened the scoring in the second quarter with a 17-yard pass to Comnick, and the Chargers (2-1) maintained a 7-0 lead into halftime.
Eichner reached paydirt on a 3-yard scamper in the third quarter, and Merrick followed with TD runs of seven and 10 yards, respectively, to round out W-WG's night offensively.
Defensively, the Chargers stymied a club that had averaged 40 points over its first two games. Michael Jarmer, Eichner, Justin Knackmuhs and Jace Jarmer each had quarterback sacks, and Weston Dibble contributed an interception. Eichner recorded 12 tackles on the night, Dibble had 10, and Aaron Thiesen and Knackmuhs had nine apiece.
W-WG will host Cleveland next Friday.
