Prep sports roundup: JCC boys fall on hardwood, Luverne girls freeze L-D-C

MAPLE RIVER — A strong Minnehaha Academy team clipped Jackson County Central 71-42 Saturday in the third place game of the Maple River Boys Basketball Tournament.

On Friday, JCC lost to Maple River 65-55.

In the Saturday contest, 15 points apiece from JaVonni Bickman and Simeon Davis led the way for Minnehaha Academy. The Redhawks led 39-27 at halftime and outscored the Huskies 32-15 the rest of the way.

Senior center Jon Harmening led Jackson County Central with 14 points and 15 rebounds, and teammate Brady Place scored 12 points and had seven rebounds.

In Friday’s game, Harmening — who went over the 1,000-point scoring mark Dec. 2 in the team’s season opener against Granada-Huntley-East Chain — scored 18 points and pulled down 14 boards. Darnell Taylor-Breck had 14 points with five assists and Place scored 10 points.

Girls basketball 

R-T-R 56, Adrian 47

ADRIAN — Three Russell-Tyler-Ruthton players scored in double figures to lead their team to a 56-47 victory Saturday against Adrian.

Destinee Strand tallied 14 points, Justine Passail 13 and Kaylie Nielsen 12 as R-T-R advanced to 1-2 on the season.

Elizabeth Thier scored 15 points while pulling down 10 rebounds and dishing out five assists for Adrian. Bailey Grussing added 14 points for the Dragons, now 0-2.

Boys hockey

Luverne 7, L-D-C 2

LITCHFIELD — Scoring at least two goals in every period, the Luverne boys hockey team bested Litchfield-Dassel-Cokato, 7-2.

Chaz Smedsrud had two goals and an assist. Gunnar Olson had two goals and two assists. Jaxon Nelson had a goal and an assist. And Jake Aukes had two goals.

Girls hockey

Luverne 3, L-D-C 2

LITCHFIELD —The Luverne girls hockey team scored two unanswered third period goals to beat Litchfield-Dassel-Cokato 3-2.

The Cardinals trailed 1-0 following a goal scored by L-D-C junior Kalley Spreiter in the first period. Each team traded goals in the second period before Luverne made its move.

Spreiter, freshman Mariah Aukes and sophomore Madisyn Dingmann each recorded goals for Luverne. Assists for the Cards were credited to Madilyn Oye and sophomore Makayla Sterrett.

Luverne now stands at 7-2 overall and is 2-0 in Southwest Conference contention. It travels to Albert Lea Tuesday night.

Morris/Benson 4, Windom Area 3

MORRIS —Windom Area let one get away in overtime, losing 4-3 to Morris/Benson on the road.

The Eagles trailed 2-0 following the first period and came back, scoring a goal in the second period and two in the third to send the game to overtime knotted at three apiece.

Morris/Benson earned the win 4:27 into the overtime period. Windom Area fell to 1-4-1 overall and is 1-2 in Southwest Conference play going into a Tuesday game at Marshall.
