Prep tennis: Luverne boys tennis team shuts out MACCRAY
LUVERNE — Buoyed by Friday’s tight 4-3 victory over Worthington, the Luverne Cardinals boys tennis team blanked MACCRAY 7-0 on Tuesday to clinch the Southwest Conference championship with a 4-0 record.
As has often been the case this spring, the Cardinals were never threatened in any of their matches. In all but one of the sets, LHS prevailed by a 6-0 score.
MACCRAY’s lone game victory occurred at No. 2 singles where Erik Wohnoutka dispatched the visitors’ Jordan Caskey 6-1, 6-0.
Luverne’s Andrew Jelken, taking the place of Jonny Vajgrt who sat out to rest a sore elbow, won at No. 1 singles 6-0, 6-0 over Connor Hagemeyer. Hunter Robinson at No. 3 singles won 6-0, 6-0, and Isaac Gillette at No. 4 singles won by forfeit.
Luverne’s doubles teams of Blake Ziegler and Cory Stroeh (No. 1), Dalton Schoenemann and Chris Jelken (No. 2) and Toby Sengvongxay and Jacob Jarchow (No. 3) also won by 6-0, 6-0 scores.
Luverne is 12-2 on the season.
