Prep weekend roundup: Marshall's boys defeat Trojans on hardwood, Luverne hockey sweeps Morris/Benson
MARSHALL — Marshall senior Riley Sharbono scored 20 points to help hoist the Tigers past Worthington, 76-53, Saturday afternoon in a boys basketball game played in Marshall.
The Trojans struggled to get anything going as Marshall came out aggressively and wanting a win on its home floor. Worthington cut a 20-point lead by the Tigers to just nine points midway through the second half. Marshall finished the game with a string of made free-throws while the Trojans had 14 costly turnovers.
Trojan senior Marcus Potter led his team with 17 points. Spencer Grafing chipped in 14 points and Will Dudley tacked on 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Trojans now sit at 2-2 on the season and 2-1 in Southwest Conference contention.

LUVERNE — Luverne earned their second win of the season with a 57-40 victory over Fulda.
The Cardinals, now 2-5, were paced with 11 points from Blake Richters and 10 from Josh Slieter. Slieter earned a dozen rebounds while Blake Ziegler snatched seven steals to go with seven assists.
Bennett Appel had eight rebounds for Fulda. Brian Fenske had seven and Josh Ramerth six. Ramerth led Fulda in scoring with 16 points. Cole Dierks added 15. The Raiders gave up 25 turnovers in the game and dropped to 0-6 on the year.

JACKSON — Led by senior Jon Harmening’s 24 points and 14 rebounds, the Jackson County Central Huskies won a home game over St. Clair 85-73.
Junior guard Zach Schwarting added 16 points for the Huskies along with 10 rebounds. Darnell Taylor-Breck tacked on another 15 points for his squad.
For St. Clair, senior guard Ryan Cruz led the way with 25 points. Tyler Fandrich and Austin Nagel had 18 points.

JCC wins Blue Earth Area Tournament
WINNEBAGO — The Huskies finished 10 points over second place Martin County West to win the Blue Earth Area gymnastics invitational.
Jackson County Central posted a 134.925 as a team, Martin County West scored a 124.875 and Blue Earth scored a 111.625 for bronze.
Huskies sophomore Haley Bass finished second in the all-around with a 35.025. In the individual events, she scored second on balance beam (9.075), third on bars (8.025), second on vault (8.70) and third on floor exercise (9.0). Bailey Schneekloth finished third on balance beam (9.025) and Brooklyn Schuett took second on floor exercise (9.1).
Windom/ML wins at St. James, Luverne takes silver
ST. JAMES —The Windom/Mountain Lake Cobras racked up 130.5 points to outlast second place Luverne’s 125.0 at the Snowflake Invitational in St. James. Redwood Valley (104.325), St. James (95.825) and Pipestone Area (89.30) rounded out the team standings.
Cobras senior Miki Bolin took first place in all four events including vault (9.075), bars (8.1), balance beam (8.825) and floor (9.15) to capture a personal-best 35.15 and win the all-around caption. W/ML’s Hannah Kloss rounded up bronze in the vault (8.85) and bars (7.6), second on balance beam (8.6) and floor (8.725), and second in the all-around with a 33.775.
Luverne freshman Madison Schandelmeier aided the Cardinals and took second place on bars (7.85) while tieing Kloss’ 8.6 for second place on balance beam. Luverne’s Erin Sietsema finished second on vault with an 8.925.
Schandelmeier claimed third place on all-around, earning a 32.4.

LUVERNE — Luverne sophomore Chaz Smedsrud scored five goals and two assists in lifting the Cardinals boys hockey team to a 12-1 victory over Morris/Benson.
Jaxson Nelson and Logan Norman each scored two goals for the Cardinals. Jake Aukes, Andrew Verhey and Travis Frakes earned one apiece.

LUVERNE — Luverne sophomore Makayla Sterrett had five goals and two assists as Luverne’s girls hockey team routed Morris/Benson 11-1.
Madison Crabtree, Mariah Aukes, Ellen Dahl, Carly Serie and Madisyn Dingmann all recorded goals of their own for the Cardinals, who improve to 9-2. Emilie Bartels had 19 saves in net for the Cards.

JCC second at Emmetsburg, Lions 4th
EMMETSBURG, Iowa — The Huskies wrestling team finished far behind first-place Hastings (291.5) at the Emmetsburg E-Hawk Invitational.
Jackson County Central scored 158.5 points followed by Estherville-Lincoln Central (139.5), Central Lyon/George-Little Rock (138) and Fort Dodge St. Edmond (134).
JCC had four wrestlers vie for championships in the tournament, including Jacob Tvinnereim (106), Ryker VanderWoude (126), Paden Moore (160) and Luke Norland (170). Both VanderWoude and Moore defeated wrestlers from Hastings in the finals.
Central Lyon/G-LR’s Colby McIntire, a 132-pounder, took second in the tournament and Tony Lodermeier won at 285.
Sibley-Ocheyedan earns second at home tourney
SIBLEY, Iowa —The Generals’ 168 points came up short against MOC-Floyd Valley’s 179.5 at their own Sibley-Ocheyedan Wrestling Invitational. Ridgeview, Holstein placed third with 153.
Dylan Shuck (2nd), Kyle Green (3rd), Garrett Sayler (3rd), Andrew Brockshus (2nd), Trent Kruger (2nd) and Alex Santana (6th) were each placewinners for Sibley-Ocheyedan. No other information was available by press time.
