ADRIAN -- The Worthington Trojans are reaping the benefits of a late-season winning streak.

On Tuesday, Worthington won its seventh straight match to improve to 10-10 overall and earned a spot in the semifinals of the Class 2A Dual Team Wrestling Section 3 Tournament on Friday in Slayton.

"I can't say that I am surprised with our effort because our wrestlers have worked extremely hard," Trojans head coach Mark Prunty said. "The matches have been won and lost in a lot of spots, but our kids wrestle with a lot of heart."

Third-seeded Worthington moved on after taking a first-round dual from sixth-seeded Fulda/Murray County Central, 42-35, before claiming a quarterfinal match against second-seeded Luverne, 34-29.

Class 2A eighth-ranked and top-seeded Adrian Area (27-3) advanced by eliminating Fairmont/Martin County West, 64-6, in the quarterfinals. That came after the Red Bulls ousted Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove, 60-10, in the first round.

The Trojans and the Dragons will represent the South Division in the Class 2A Section 3 Tournament semifinals Friday at Murray County Central High School. Worthington will wrestle Dawson-Boyd, the top-seeded North team, while Adrian will meet Quad County, which is the third-seeded squad in the North.

Worthington 195-pound wrestler Carson Hagen feels the positive attitude WHS is sporting.

"We are really thinking uphill right now," Hagen said of the Trojans' winning streak. "For the guys who were struggling earlier in the year, we're just telling them to do what they need to do to win. With all these wins in a row, everyone's confidence is going up."

The Blackjacks defeated Morris Area/Hancock Area/Chokio-Alberta, 43-27, during the quarterfinals Tuesday at Dawson. The Sting, who also won 43-27, eliminated Marshall/Lakeview in another quarterfinal match.

In both Worthington duals, the trio of Blake Schroeder, Virgil Cerda and Hagen stepped up for the Trojans, when WHS was holding slim leads.

Ahead 19-17 against Luverne in the quarterfinals, Schroeder used 51 seconds to pin Brent Thompson at 170 before Cerda pinned Ethan Johnson in 3:02 at 182 and Hagen preserved a 2-1 decision over Wyatt Aubert in double-overtime.

"Last year, I wrestled (Aubert) in a match that went to triple-overtime, when I beat him at the (individual) section tournament. I knew this was going to be a good match," said Hagen, who gained his second point of the bout on an escape during the first 30 seconds of the second overtime. "I just had to score first because (my opponents) usually can't hold me down. Then, I needed to keep (Aubert) down so he couldn't get a switch on me."

The Trojans clung to a 24-23 lead against Fulda/Murray County Central in the first round. But Cerda pinned Breylan Jacobson in 22 seconds at 170 before Schroeder needed 24 seconds to pin Dylan Nelson at 182 and Hagen secured a pin against Shae Postma in 50 seconds.

"These matches have been back-and-forth. Some of our kids have had big wins and other would like to have some mathes back," Prunty said. "But if one our our kids falls, another teammate comes along and picks him up."

Adrian Area coasted through its win over Fairmont/Martin County West.

The Dragons took a 37-3 lead through eight bouts with pins from Skylar Hieronimus (106), Ryan Elias (113), Tony Lynn (132), Michael Pruess (138) and Hunter Heitkamp (145). Jayden Bullerman (126) and Matthew Slater (152) picked up decisions along the way.

At 160, the Red Bulls' Joe Weber temporarily slowed Adrian Area with a 7-1 decision against Justin Elias. But the Dragons' Dylan Gyberger won a 5-0 decision from Brock Burmeister at 170 before Adrian Area's Jesse Slater (182), Adam Garms (195), Tony Sieve (220) and Quinn Cleveland (285) finished the dual with pins.
