Prep wrestling: WHS wins twice; Adrian pins Cobras
SLAYTON — Securing their standing in South Section 3AA, the Worthington Trojans swept to solid victories against Fairmont/Martin County West and Fulda/Murray County Central Thursday night in high school wrestling action.
Worthington drubbed Fairmont/MCW 42-23, then beat Fulda/Murray County Central 61-9.
“They’re both south section opponents. We had to win these two to get a good matchup in the section, and we did,” said WHS head coach Mark Prunty. “A great team effort in both matches.”
The Trojans got off to a strong start against Fairmont/Martin County West, winning five of the first six weight classes. Hser Eh Pwae won by fall at 106 pounds, Hser Moo Pwae won a decision at 120, defending state champ Anthony Luft won by fall at 132 and King Blanchette won by decision at 138. Worthington won at 126 by forfeit.Also winning matches for Worthington was Zach Kempema with a decision at 160 pounds, Blake Schroeder by fall at 170, Carson Hagen by decision at 195 and Trevor Wietzema by fall at heavyweight.Worthington won every weight class against Fulda/Murray County Central except at 113 and 120, where the Warriors’ Clayton Hatrtle beat Moo Pwae 8-6 and Jon Gehl pinned Ethan Pavelko in 5:09. But the Trojans got pins from Cody Michelson at 145, Vince Riley at 152 and Schroeder at 170. Prunty was especially pleased with the two-match performance of Blanchette, who finished off a good night with an 8-6 win over F/MCCs’ Nathan Beech at 138 pounds.Fairmont/MCW had three falls in a 58-21 win over the homestanding Warriors while Nathan Beech won by 12-5 decision at 138 for F/MCC and Dylan Nelson pinned his opponent in 2:53 at 182 pounds. Fulda/Murray County Central received two forfeits in the dual.

Adrian 45, Windom/ML 19WINDOM — Class A’s sixth-rated Adrian Dragons scooted out to a big finish, in a 45-19 non-conference win over Windom/Mountain Lake.Adrian had falls earned by Ryan Elias (126), Jesse Slater (170), Dylan Gyberg (195) and Tony Sieve (285) in the dual and won the night’s last five matches to command attention and the victory.Wyatt Stevens (113), Ben Matter (152) and Andrew Larson (160) were each winners for the Cobras, who are now 9-5. Adrian is 17-5 and has a big match tonight at Class A’s top-ranked Jackson County Central (15-3).Windom/Mountain Lake will take a long trip Saturday to a tournament in Lake City.
