Raymond Wilbert Baumgard

Raymond Wilbert Baumgard, 96, was born April 16, 1917 in Ewington Township, Jackson County, Minnesota. Ray was the son of Rudolph and Caroline Baumgard. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brewster. Ray attended country school until eighth grade then began working on the family farm.

In 1942, Ray was drafted into the Army to serve during World War II. Before heading overseas, he was united in marriage to Mavis Marie McConnell in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan on July 10, 1943. During World War II, he served in England, Germany, and France.

After the war, Ray returned home from Europe and moved to a farm outside of Brewster, where he continued farming and started a family with his wife, Mavis. Over the years, Ray spent many hours at the local sale barns actively trading all kinds of livestock. Ray kept farming until his retirement and after his retirement Ray continued to have an active role on the farm. He loved farming and spent the remaining years of his life sharing farm stories with his children and grandchildren. He was an active member of the community through his involvement with the Elks Lodge, Okabena School Board (9 years), Alba Township (45 years) and the American Legion (65+ years). Ray spent his life making others happy with his quick sense of humor and generosity.

Ray died on Thursday, August 22, 2013, at the Heron Lake Assisted Living in Heron Lake, MN.

Ray is survived by his wife of 70 years, Mavis; two children, James (Kathy) Baumgard of Spirit Lake, IA and Brad (Jackie) Baumgard of Okabena, MN; five grandchildren, Stacey (David) Robinson, Allen (Heather) Baumgard, Eddie (Danielle) Sepich, Emily Baumgard and Molly Baumgard; one granddaughter-in-law, Deidre Baumgard, as well as five great grandchildren, Andrew Grau, Gage Tuttle, Kaylah Robinson, Olivia Baumgard and Cooper Baumgard.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, Edna, Hazel and Alice, four brothers, Lester, Wesley, Marvin and Harlan Place, who was raised as a brother, and one grandson, Scott Baumgard.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 26, 2013, at 10:30 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Brewster, MN, with the Rev. David P. McDonald officiating. Casket bearers will be Keith Baumgard, Court Baumgard, Mike Baumgard, Jay Baumgard, Mitch Hogan and Luke Henning. Burial will be in the Hersey Cemetery near Brewster.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at the Benson Funeral Home in Worthington, MN.
