Robert "Bob" Burns Ferguson Sr.

Bob Ferguson was born on October 3, 1919 in Chatfield, Minnesota to Jessie Ann Ferguson and stepfather, Ignatz Haberman. He grew up on the farm near Heron Lake and graduated from Heron Lake High School in 1938. Following high school, Bob attended Iowa State University in Ames, IA for Electrical Engineering. Bob served as a Sergeant in the ROTC from 1939 to 1941. In 1941, he returned to the family farm and farmed with his family. On October 3, 1945 he and Lucille “Lucy” Henkels were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake. Following their marriage, they farmed west of Heron Lake and raised their 10 children. In 2003, they retired and built a new home in Heron Lake. Bob passed away at the age of 93 on Wednesday; September 4, 2013 at his home in Heron Lake with his wife of 67 years by his side. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served as church trustee. Bob also served on the Heron Lake Elevator Board, Heron Lake School Board, La Crosse Township Board and was on the Heron Lake planning committee for the community center. One of Bob’s biggest pleasures after retiring was to go “check out the crops” and visit the farm. Bob enjoyed spending time with his family, farming, hunting, bowling, shooting pool at the Senior Center and visiting with friends and anyone he met.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Ferguson of Heron Lake, MN, his 10 children and their spouses, Robert and Jean Ferguson Jr. of Heron Lake, MN, Linda and Dan Short of Raleigh, NC, Bonnie and Robert Messenbrink of Annandale, MN, Carol and Gerald Larson of Burnsville, MN, Roger and Susan Ferguson Prior Lake, MN, Brian and Rhonda Ferguson of Heron Lake, MN, John Ferguson and Gail Rogers of Heron Lake, MN, Christine Robinson and John Williams of Luverne, MN, Steven and Barbara Ferguson of Burnsville, MN, and Michelle and Joseph Miranowski of Slayton, MN, 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his mother, Jessie Haberman and stepfather, Ignatz Haberman, grandson, Bryce Messenbrink, granddaughter, Rebecca Messenbrink, step-sister, Ella Just and two step-brothers, Harold and Clem Haberman.

Funeral services will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Heron Lake, MN on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. with Fr. Russell Scepaniak officiating. Interment is at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Heron Lake, MN.

Visitation will be today at Sacred Heart Church in Heron Lake from 4-7 p.m. with a prayer services at 4:30 p.m. visitation will also be from 9:30 to 10:30 on Saturday at the church. Totzke Funeral Home of Slayton is entrusted with arrangements. To send condolences visit totzkefuneralhome.com.
