Robert "Bob" Sellberg
Robert "Bob" Sellberg, age 87, passed away on Monday, February 17, 2014, at the Crossroads Care Center in Worthington, MN.
He was born in Crookston, MN on June 26, 1926, to Otto and Emma (Solem) Sellberg and was baptized in the Lutheran faith at Trinity Lutheran. He was raised in Crookston and graduated from Central High School in 1944. He then enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps and served until the end of World War II in 1945. Attended Concordia College in Moorhead and graduated in 1950 with degrees in Mathematics and Economics. Also, was active in sports, basketball and football and always enjoyed all sports his whole life.
After graduating from college he taught school in Clifford, ND, and Kindred, ND, and coached both football and basketball. His basketball team at Kindred was in the finals at the State Class C Tournament in 1952. Bob married his college sweetheart, Virginia (Ginger) Overvold on June 12, 1953, at the Grace Methodist Church in Moorhead, MN and they moved to Leeds, ND, where they both taught. Bob coached basketball and football and won the Class B Basketball State Tournament Championship in 1954 in Minot, ND. He made many friends in Leeds and was especially close to his teams which always drew them back to reunions over the years. Those three years were a highlight in his coaching career! He enjoyed keeping "in touch" the following years when he and wife, Ginger, and son, Jeff, moved to Herman, MN, where Bob continued teaching and coaching and daughter, Barbara was born.
After accepting an offer to sell Prudential Insurance, the family moved to Moorhead, MN. He missed being in the school system and so was offered a teaching job in Worthington, MN and accepted. He taught Math in the Junior High in Worthington for 29 years and coached basketball.
Son, Danny, was born in Worthington and when he was 2 years old, Bob accepted a National Science and Math Grant to study at the University of Maryland for six weeks which he really appreciated and enjoyed. It was a great experience for the whole family. Blessed with another daughter in 1962, Kari Beth, Bob cherished his family and loved being with them always.
Besides his teaching career Bob was a crop hail adjuster in the summers for Continental Insurance and continued this throughout the teaching years. After retiring in 1986, he had many part-time jobs such as reading city meters, working at Prairie View Golf Course and others.
Bob was a hobby person! Really enjoyed his pinochle card club which existed for many years. He always loved airplanes and built and flew radio controlled planes for pleasure and belonged to the Southwest Flyers Organization for several years. Was also challenged by jigsaw and crossword puzzles. He enjoyed archery and bow hunting in North Dakota. Then would tan hides in the basement. However, his biggest pastime was golf! He played for many years at many courses during his lifetime including Pebble Beach in California. He loved playing with his sons and all family. Made several trips to California to play in the "Big Sky" tourney which was made up of son Jeffs lawyer friends. He won the tournament in 2004.
Made many camping trips all over the states and had such fun with all of them. Then there were eleven grandchildren to love and play with! Didnt miss any activities they were in and was always excited for them.
Being an active member of his church, American Lutheran, he served in many areas which were singing in the choir, being a financial counter, ushering, doing some maintenance and being available wherever he was needed.
May God bless the memory of our dear husband, Dad, and Grandpa and friend, Bob.
