Section 2A boys basketball: MLA dumps SWU

MOUNTAIN LAKE — In Section 2A south basketball action, the Mountain Lake Area Wolverines opened their playoff action with a solid performance against the Southwestern United Wildcats, winning 72-43.

Leading the charge for the Wolverines was senior guard Cody Klassen. Klassen tallied 19 points on the evening followed by Zach Dickens’ 15 points and seven rebounds. Carter Kirk had 15 points for MLA and added to it 12 rebounds and five assists. Senior Andrew Hempeck tacked on an extra nine points and five assists.

“We played a really strong first half,” MLA head coach Shawn Naas said. “We really set the tone. That was probably the strongest first half I’ve seen in the past couple of years.”

For SWU, senior Aaron Fest led the way with 13 points and Trey Cranston followed closely behind with 12. Senior center Zach Schumacher had 10 points and seven rebounds.

MLA’s next opponent is Mankato- Loyola, and they will face off on Friday at 6 in Lake Crystal. Loyola defeated Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton on Tuesday, 71-58.
