Section 3A Baseball: Erickson shuts out Wolverines
SLAYTON -- Murray County Central's Sam Erickson struck out 12 batters in a complete game shutout of the Mountain Lake Area Wolverines during a Section 3A Tournament play-in game Wednesday.
"It was a real pitcher's duel tonight between Sam and [Mountain Lake Area's] Andrew Hirsch," MCC coach Tarry Boelter said. "Our defense made some really nice plays to help keep MLA off the scoreboard."
Hirsch also went the distance for Mountain Lake Area, allowing six hits while striking out 11 batters in the loss.
Erickson started the game by blanking the Wolverines in the top of the first inning, which set up the Rebels to take the lead in the bottom of the inning.
"Jordan Ahlers really did a nice job catching Sam today," Boelter said. "He threw out a runner and blocked multiple balls that were in the dirt. He has come a long way since the beginning of the year."
Nick Petersen (1-for-2) knocked in both runs for Murray County Central in the bottom of the first to put the Rebels up 2-0.
The two teams combined for 12 hits on the day, with neither team scoring after the first inning.
"Seth Bass and Mitchell Woldt both had diving catches in the outfield that were outstanding," Boelter said. "Our defense didn't commit any errors and that is what helped us win."
Alex Gerdes led the Wolverines with two hits at the plate.
With the win , the Rebels advance to face the No. 1 seed Windom Eagles in the second round of the Section 3A Tournament Saturday.
"We have our work cut out for us with Windom," Boelter said. "They play in a tough conference and they won't be surprised by anything we throw at them. We'll have to play errorless baseball to have a chance to beat them."
The winner of that game moves on to play the winner of the No. 4 Russell-Tyler-Ruthton and No. 5 Edgerton/Southwest Christian game later in the day.
