Section 3A golf: MCC boys, Windom Area girls win state berths
MARSHALL — Grant Everson led his Murray County Central boys golf team back to the state tournament on Wednesday, and the Windom Area girls also qualified from the Section 3A tournament in Marshall.
Everson struck an 18-hole total of 77 strokes as the MCC boys carded a 342 team score, just three strokes better than second place Windom Area’s 345.
On the girls’ side, Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s Abby Herding came into the clubhouse with a medalist’s round of 83. As a team, the Windom Area girls turned in a solid victory with 364 strokes compared to runnerup Minneota/Lincoln HI’s 381.
The MCC boys and the Windom Area girls will compete in the state Class A tournament at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker June 10-11. Every member of the first-place teams, plus the top five individuals not on the winning team, also qualify for state.
Joining Everson at the state meet will be MCC teammates Adam Christensen, Jaden Boerboom, Tyler Groves, Brad Schreiber and Jack Pierson. Other boy golfers going to state will be Ben Henning of Adrian, Kyle Antes and Dylan Pigman of Windom Area, and Jeremy Alsaker and Hunter Burns of Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.
The Windom Area girls will send Miki Bolin, Kelsey Hanefeld, Maitland Vollan, Emily Jackson, Leigh Hanefeld and Marissa Cartwright. Besides Herding, other state-bound individuals include Kyra Gores, Allison Bot and Heidi Guttermsson of Minneota/Lincoln HI and Whitney Fischer of Lakeview.Henning was just one stroke off Everson’s pace, with a 78. Christensen finished third with 80, followed by Antes (81), Alsaker and Pigman, both with 84s, and Burns (86). Burns parred the first hole to win a four-way playoff for the last state berth with Jeff Gladis of Minneota/Lincoln HI, Clay Salzwedel of Southwestern United and Devin Skalak of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton.
Russell-Tyler-Ruthton placed third in the boys team standings with a 365. Minneota/Lincoln HI had 370.
The Adrian girls had a 412. Lakeview had 430.
Murray County Central represented Section 3A at last year’s boys state tournament and finished second. Christensen tied for 18th in the individual standings while Evenson finished in a tie for 43rd.
Herding tied for seventh in the 2013 girls state tournament. The Section 3A team representative, Minneota, placed sixth.
While Everson and Christensen paced the MCC boys, help also came with teammates Boerboom (92) and Groves (93). The Windom Area girls got good balance with Bolin (86), Kelsey Hanefeld (90), Vollan (92), Jackson (96) and Leigh Hanefeld (97) all coming in under 100.
Katie Wieneke and Mackenzie Wagner both had 101 to lead the Adrian girls. Teammates Jada Elias had 103, Marissa Veld 107 and Alexia Kemper 108. Other area scores of note: Katie Reynolds of Fulda, 100; Kailey Wendland of Southwestern United, 102; Brittany Leinen of Fulda, 106; Hannah Davis and Liz Prahm, both of MCC, 109.
