Section 3A individual wrestling: Fifteen area matmen earn state berths

PIPESTONE — Adrian, Windom/Mountain Lake and Wabasso/Red Rock Central qualified four individuals for the Minnesota state high school wrestling tournament Saturday, and Pipestone Area qualified three.

Competing in the Section 3A Individual Tournament at Pipestone Area High School, the Dragons produced champions at 106, 138 and 170 pounds. Skylar Hieronimus, a sophomore and the second-ranked 106-pounder in Class A, defeated Brock Buysse of Minneota 2-1 in his championship bout and will bring a 38-2 record to St. Paul this week. Junior teammate Tony Lynn defeated Bryce Bruner of Minneota 8-4 to win at 138 and is 35-4. Another junior, Jesse Slater, beat Jordan Schroepfer of Wabasso/Red Rock Central 4-2 in the championship to move to 37-2 on the season.

Slater is the state’s No. 3-ranked wrestler at 170 pounds and Schroepfer, a junior with a 34-4 record, is ranked No. 4.

The fourth Dragon qualifying for state is sophomore 132-pounder Michael Preuss (27-12), who finished second in the sectional to Windom/Mountain Lake junior Jared Willaby (36-4). Preuss won a 7-6 true second match against Jordan Engler of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg to advance. Willaby, ranked second in state Class A in his weight class, pinned Engler at 132.

Besides Willaby, Windom/Mountain Lake qualified Wyatt Stevens at 113 pounds, Joe Fischenich at 120 and Vince Johnson at 195. Stevens, a junior who’ll bring a 33-8 record to St. Paul, lost in the finals to Pipestone Area eighth-grader Michael Suda (36-2) by 6-3 decision. Fischenich (36-3), a junior ranked No. 4 in the state at 120, lost in the finals to senior Spencer Jenniges of Wabasso/Red Rock Central (37-0) by 9-4 decision and had to win a true second match to secure his state berth. Jenniges, who placed second at 113 pounds in last year’s state tourney, is ranked No. 2 this year at 120.

The Cobras’ Johnson defeated Chase Norton of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg 3-1 in his 195-pound championship match Saturday.

Joining Suda in the state tournament are Pipestone Area teammates Brady Bos and Will Smith. Bos, who placed fourth at 152 pounds in last year’s state tourney and is currently rated No. 4 in the same weight class, beat Nicholas Esping of Minneota 4-2 in the 152-pound title bout Saturday. A senior, Bos is 35-2 on the season. Smith placed second at 182 pounds, falling 7-2 to Canby’s Christian Full in the final. A junior, Smith (28-12) edged Karter Van Heuveln 7-6 for true second.

Joining Schroepfer and Jenniges at state for Wabasso/Red Rock Central are teammates Jared Welch and Alex Schroepfer. Welch, a freshman, lost his 220-pound championship match in a fall in 6:13 to BOLD’s Travor Nissen. Welch will bring a 29-10 record to state. Schroepfer, the state’s top-ranked heavyweight, pinned Minneota’s Trent Esping in just nine seconds to capture a sectional title. A senior, Schroepfer is 37-0 and in his two prior matches at the Section 3A tourney, he pinned opponents in 1:44 and :12. Schroepfer placed fifth at heavyweight last year at state.

126 — Cody Peters (Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg) decisioned Landyn VanOverbeke (Minneota) 8-4.

132 — Jared Willaby (Windom/Mountain Lake) pinned Jordan Engler (Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg) in 5:02. True second — Michael Preuss (Adrian) decisioned Engler 7-6.

138 — Tony Lynn (Adrian) decisioned Bryce Bruner (Minneota) 8-4. True second — Bruner decisioned Grant Ascheman (Benson) 7-2.

145 — Alec Engler (Minneota) decisioned Jack Citrowske (Canby) 5-1. True second — Nicholas Meyer (Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg) decisioned Citrowske 11-4.

152 — Brady Bos (Pipestone Area) decisioned Nicholas Esping (Minneota) 4-2.

170 — Jesse Slater (Adrian) decisioned Jordan Schroepfer (Wabasso/Red Rock Central) 4-2. True second — Schropfer pinned Travis Lamecker (Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg) in :32.

182 — Christian Full (Canby) decisioned Will Smith (Pipestone Area) 7-2. True second — Smith decisioned Karter Van Heuveln 7-6.
