Section 3AA finals: JCC cruises on Maple River
MARSHALL — The Jackson County Central football team passed another test Friday night, and through it they are on to state.
It wasn’t exactly a cruise or anything flashy, but the blue-and-white will take wins however they can get them, coach Tom Schuller said after the game.
“We’re excited, but the goal is always to get another game,” Schuller said. “It’s kind of like a semester test. We got one but now we have another one we need to study for. The problem is that, if you fail that one, you’re done and you have to pack up the gear.”The Huskies worked from midfield on its opening drive and opened the game’s scoring with a four-yard run from senior Keegan Moore.Paden Moore answered the call from a Maple River touchdown and gave the Huskies a 14-7 halftime edge, scoring on a three yard rush with 9:27 to go in the second stanza. The game would never be tied again.JCC added to its lead with a safety. Maple River stalled offensively deep in its own territory. A bad snap on the Eagles’ punt went through the end zone and was a turning point for the Huskies, who suddenly held a two-possession advantage with 1:06 left in the first half.“We’ve done a great job of limiting penalties all year but didn’t do that tonight. We have a week to clean that up,” Schuller said. “Any way to get off the field. The safety was a very big play for us.”Luke Norland rushed 68 yards for a score to cap the game for JCC while the Eagles struggled to capitalize in key situations.Keegan Moore led JCC on the night with 31 totes for 150 yards rushing and Norland added three carries for 70 yards. Darnell Taylor-Breck caught four balls for 67 yards as the Huskies racked up a sum of 376 yards on the night. The Huskies learned they will face Chatfield in the quarterfinals next Friday night in Rochester. Chatfield outlasted Section 1’s top-seeded Caledonia 13-10 in overtime for its section final.“We just stayed with it. Maple River made us earn it,” Schuller said. “It was a great victory for us. I tip my hat to Maple River. They really battled us tonight.”MR 7 0 0 0 — 7JCC 7 9 0 7 — 23
