Spirit Lake man pleads not guilty in the death of Jackson woman

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa — A Spirit Lake man accused in the death of a Jackson woman was arraigned Monday in Dickinson County District Court.

Tailer Handsaker, 21, pleaded not guilty to the charge of first-degree murder in the death of 36-year-old Sarah Renee Grimmius of Jackson.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office found Grimmius dead when deputies arrived at about 10:30 p.m. Dec. 8 at a home in rural Spirit Lake.

Court documents indicate she may have been dead for a couple of days before her body was discovered. The exact date of death is unknown.

Handsaker has two previous convictions for under 21 consumption in Jackson County. A charge of controlled substance possession from 2010 was dismissed during a plea agreement several months later.

Handsaker was also charged with underage consumption numerous times in Iowa courts and has convictions of harassing a peace officer and carrying a weapon. He has been involved in plea agreements resulting in dismissal of charges including disorderly conduct, assault and theft.

Handsaker remains in custody in the Dickinson County Jail while a trial date is pending. He is held on a $500,000 bond.
