WORTHINGTON -- Three buildings and more than a century later, St. Mary's Catholic Church parishioners will be celebrating this Sunday as their church mark its 125th anniversary.

"It's not a huge ordeal but we just wanted to acknowledge it," said church liturgist Jill Roush. "The theme this year is "Come, Follow Me," which is based on this Sunday's gospel."

A bilingual mass in English and Spanish is scheduled at 11 a.m. Sunday. A potluck fellowship will follow at noon.

St. Mary's has grown significantly since its humble beginning in 1886 with a building of only seven or eight pews.

"Our church was a little white, wooden church on the same corner," said longtime parishioner Karen Molitor.

As the congregation grew in 1927, it was time for a new building.

The church history states a bell tower was constructed, but the tower never contained a bell.

"I was in eighth grade in '59 and we watched from our classroom as the bulldozer knocked the tower off," Molitor recalled as the construction for the third and current church began.

Standing tall on the corner of 12th Street and Seventh Avenue, the bell tower -- now complete with bells -- is now a prominent feature at St. Mary's.

The congregation had a great centennial celebration in 1986, Molitor said.

"Maybe we'll celebrate the 150th anniversary," she added.
