"In the three years Kate has been at the state tournament, this is her best first day score yet," WHS coach Ron Wood said. "She had a really strong front nine, where she hit six greens. Her back nine wasn't quite as good, but she played with a lot of guts and never quit."

Lesnar double-bogied twice on the back nine, but saved herself by picking up back-to-back pars on No. 17 and No. 18 to finish off the round.

"On the back nine Kate began to pull her ball to the left," Wood said, "but we talked a lot after each hole and she was able to fix it by the end to land the back-to-back pars on the last two holes."

The day started off nice and cool for the golfers, but the humidity shot up as the day went on making it harder to swing the club on every hole.

"When the heat and humidity hit the bugs came out hard as well," Wood said. "I'm really proud of the maturity Kate showed to keep going even though things were getting uncomfortable on the course."

Jackson County Central's Abby Brinkman ended the day tied for thirty-fourth with an 88. Hannah Peterson of Marshall shot a career best 74 to put her in third after the first day of golf behind leaders Natalie Roth (70) and Kate Smith (72).

Lesnar is scheduled to take the course for the final round of golf today at 12:36 p.m., weather permitting.

On the boys side, Murray County Central finished third upon the completion of the first round of the team Class A Boys Golf Tournament at Pebble Creek, with a team score of 333 which was just three points behind second place Legacy Christian Academy (330). Mille Lacs sat in first with a 310.

Devin Erickson was tied for fifthteenth with a low score of 80 for the Rebels, followed by Adam Christensen (81), Ben Loosbrock (85), Grant Everson (87), Aaron Boock (92) and Tyler Groves (98).
