State wrestling: Four Trojans reach state quarterfinals in Class AA
ST. PAUL — The Worthington Trojans wrestling team turned in a nearly-perfect 4-1 effort in the opening round of the state wrestling tournament at the Xcel Energy Center Thursday.
Winning matches for Worthington were Hser Eh Pwae (106), Anthony Luft (126), Zach Kempema and Blake Schroeder.
Eh Pwae, with a 5-2 decision over Scott West eighth-grader Jackson Stauffacher, will meet Hibbing eighth-grader AJ Bethea in the quarterfinal round. Defending state champion Anthony Luft won a major decision in his opener over Aaron Sistrunk of Chisago Lakes Area. He will face Scott West junior David Flynn (41-2) up next.
At 160, Kempema defeated New Prague senior Joe Heinz by 11-3 major decision to set up a quarterfinal-round match with Mahtomedi senior Carter Focht. At 170 pounds, Schroeder outlasted St. Paul Highland Park's Billy Merth in a 7-5 decision and will face Tri City United's Josh Selly in the quarterfinals.
At 195 pounds, Worthington junior Carson Hagen lost by 3-2 decision in the opening round. Hagen was a state place winner last year.
Fulda/Murray County Central sophomore Clayton Hartle battled to a pin at 4:59 of his first-round bout with Richfield senior Justin Swetala at 113. Hartle will now wrestle Simley seventh-grader Anthony Jackson.
Tracy-Milroy-Balaton/Westbrook-Walnut Grove's lone qualifer, Logan Axford, picked up a first-round decision, winning 6-0 over North Branch Ried Johnson at 132. Axford's quarterfinal match will be against Zimmerman senior Hunter Smith.
Losing a match for Luverne was senior Spencer Oeltjenbruns at 182, where Zimmerman junior Austin May won by 4-2 decision.
The quarterfinal round for all classes begins today at 4:30 p.m.
