Stingrays dive into season
WORTHINGTON -- Fifty-eight swimmers hit the pool for the Worthington Stingrays versus Southdale (Minneapolis) Saturday and seven qualified for the Regional Meet.
Oliver Wolyniec qualified in three categories, Tim Skog qualified in two categories and Matt Sorensen, Sara Janssen, Cameron Jenson, Madison Neuberger and Blaine Doeden each qualified in one category.
"With 22 new swimmers, the team has grown," Stingrays coach Donna Damm said. "This was the first meet of the year and the swimmer(s) did fantastic."
Wolyniec won the Boys 14 and Under 50-yard free style (26.39 seconds), 100 free (1:00.44) and the 100 breastroke (1:16.92), while Jenson qualified in the 50 free (28.92), finishing second, and won the 500 free (6:31.55).
"Oliver Wolyniec hit the water with a mission to accomplish," Damm said.
In the Boys 18 and Under division, Skog qualified in the 50 free (26.09) and 100 free (1:01.59), finishing second in both events and won the 100 back (1:16.30). Sorensen won and qualified in 50 free (25.86), while also winning the 100 free (1:00.66).
In the Girls 18 and Under category, Janssen qualified and won the 50 free (28.92), while also winning the 200 free (2:28.04) and 100 free (1:07.06). Neuberger qualified in the Girls 14 and Under 50 free (29.11), finishing second.
Doeden won the 100 individual medley (1:30.45), 50 butterfly (47.11) and the 50 breastroke (51.32) for the Boys 10 and Under division. Bryan Doeden won the Boys 14 and Under 100 backstroke (1:32.11).
In the Boys 12 and Under division, Porter Elsing won the 50 free (33.92), 50 butterfly (45.34) and the 50 breastroke (49.66).
Anwar Farra took home the victory in the Boys 10 and Under 100 free (1:29.09).
Kyle Janssen won the 200 free (3:16.32) and the 100 free (1:25.54) in the Boys 12 and Under division.
Ben Doeden won the 200 individual medley (2:58.98) and the 200 breastroke (3:22.79) in the Boys 18 and Under division. Meredith Moore won the 100 backstroke (1:23.07) in the Girls 14 and Under division and Ashley Muller won the 100 fly (1:39.11).
Justin Paulzine won the 200 free (2:42.03) in the Boys 14 and Under division.
Dillon Pedersen won the Boys 18 and Under breastroke (1:20.88), Tracy Prins won the Girls 18 and Under breastroke (1:42.48), Brittany Saulsgiver won the Girls 18 and Under backstroke (1:25.27) and butterfly (1:32.26) and Sophie Wietzma won the Girls 8 and Under 25 free (21.94) to round out the individual winners for the Stingrays.
In relays, Jenson, Paulzine, Bryan Doeden and Oliver Wolyniec won the Boys 14 and Under 200 free (2:00.17), Prins, Saulsgiver, Rebecca Christensen and Sara Janssen won the Girls 18 and Under 200 free (2:10.96) and Sorensen, Nathan Landwehr, Ben Doeden and Skog won the Boys 18 and Under 200 free (1:58.17).
The Stingrays will be away for their next two meets. They will travel to St. Cloud Saturday and Albert Lea Nov. 19.
