WORTHINGTON — Larger success often comes as the fruit of many smaller decisions made and then acted upon. Consider, then, the Worthington Stingrays swim team.

Home to 41 swimmers ranging from elementary school to high school age, the Stingrays have been a staple program offered at the Worthington Area YMCA for many, many years.

Piling on to a host of other reasons that have made this season memorable, head coach Donna Damm reported this week that 31 of her swimmers have earned the right to compete Sunday at the State YMCA Swim Meet at the University of Minnesota.

Two of the Stingrays’ three seniors, Sarah Janssen and Rebecca Christensen, will help lead their pack to Minneapolis.

“I like our team a lot. We have a lot of fun and are a goofy bunch,” Janssen said this week before one of her team’s practices at the YMCA. Janssen will be a part of five events at state. She also plays tennis for the Worthington Trojans, performs in the school’s band and deliberates in student council.

“I’m super excited for this weekend,” Janssen said. “I like swimming at the U of M. The pool is really big and I’ll get to spend the weekend with friends and family.”

Christensen, on the other hand, has a pair of relays she’ll be involved in at this year’s state meet. Christensen has been involved with the Stingrays for the past five years while Janssen has been with the club for six years.

Christensen, a tennis player in the fall and a golfer in the spring for the Trojans, has found her time with the Stingrays to be invaluable.

The team’s third senior, Ben Doeden, would likely have qualified for state, but he is involved with WHS’s production of the Wizard of Oz this weekend at Memorial Auditorium.

“I love the people on our swim team and I love our coach. She’s awesome,” Christensen said, referring to Damm. “It will be sad this weekend since it is my last meet, but it will also be fun. We hope to go in and do as well as we can and put our hearts and souls into it.”

For the older swimmers, reaching state can be a bit easier, Damm explained, simply because the pickings are leaner in that age group due to high school swim teams taking swimmers away from YMCA programs. For the youngsters, it is much more difficult.

No matter the age group, it is all based on a swimmer’s placing at the sectional meet, and reaching state is an achievement to be celebrated.

This year’s sectional was held in Worthington due to inclement weather canceling the scheduled road trip.

“One of my goals as the coach is to set up my relays so that the most kids can go. A lot of the kids going are only going in relays, so I was successful with that,” Damm said. “I try to get the relays set up so they can go to state. That way, four kids get to go.

“I’m really excited because almost the entire team that is available to go is going,” she added. “We’re basically going as a team, and that makes it that much more fun. We always like to bring home hardware, and the top eight in each event will get medals.”

The Stingrays’ season won’t end this weekend. For 15 swimmers, the practices and seemingly endless hard work will continue until it finds an outlet again, this time at a regional meet scheduled for April.

“It’s elite and it’s a big deal,” Damm said of the regional meet. “Their time qualifications are tougher to get. We’ll have at least 15 kids who will continue to practice.”

The following are individuals who will be competing on their own, or in relays, at this weekend’s state meet:
