Tennis: Worthington, Luverne roll to victory

WORTHINGTON -- On a hot day with a welcome breeze, the Worthington Trojans boys tennis team blanked Blue Earth Area 7-0 Tuesday. No match went three sets. And only one contained as much as a tie-breaker.

That one was at No. 4 singles, where Worthington's Bryan Doeden defeated Blue Earth Area's Ben Gettis 7-6 (8-6 tie-breaker), 6-3.

At No. 1 singles, the Trojans' Carter Lindner, fresh off a three-set setback Monday against Fairmont, shut out rival Trenton Stindtman 6-0, 6-0. The Trojans second singles entry, Andrew Johnson beat Chandler Kienitz 6-0, 6-0, and at No. 3 singles Ben Doeden was a 6-2, 6-4 winner over Eric Purvis.

Worthington also eased to victory in doubles matches. The Trojans' No. 1 doubles team of A.J. Hayenga and Dillon Pedersen earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Blue Earth Area's Cole Klinksiek and Spencer Petersen. At No. 2 doubles, Kody Honius and Nick Newman got the better of Jaron King and Martin Granados 6-3, 6-3, and at No. 3 doubles, Isaac Houselog and Levi Blanchard blanked Mason Hehr and Spenser Timmerman 6-0, 6-0.

The following Worthington players participated in junior varsity matches:

D.J. Bergen and Sebastian Licea won 7-5; Carter Ponto and Kyle Janssen lost 5-7; Nick Putnam and Brandon Harberts won 8-3; Max Langerud and Kenneth Garcia lost 3-8; and singles player Scott Schneider won 8-0.

Worthington hosts MACCRAY on Thursday.

LHS 7, MACCRAY 0

CLARA CITY -- Luverne moved its record to 13-0 on a very windy day with a 7-0 win over MACCRAY, showing little difficulty in dispatching of all opponents.

In No. 1 singles competition, the Cardinals' Joey Vajgrt topped Brandon Wieberdink 6-0, 6-4. The Cards' Jonny Vajgrt defeated Miguel Garcia 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, as Dustin Deutch won his third singles match 6-0, 6-0 over Preston Dobmeier. At fourth singles, Andrew Jelken won by forfeit.

Luverne's No. 1 doubles team of Scott Nelson and Blake Ziegler won 6-3, 6-1. Ethan Johnson and Zach Gillette won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. And Matt Arends and Hunter Robinson won by forfeit at No. 3 doubles.
