REDWOOD FALLS -- Austin Kretsch's power-play goal in overtime lifted the Redwood Valley Cardinals to a 5-4 win over the Worthington Trojans Thursday.

The Cardinals started off the game with three straight goals in the first 9 minutes, 27 seconds of the game to put the Trojans in a 3-0 hole early in the game. Hunter Breidenbach, Kretsch and Chris Hallden scored Redwood Valley in the first period.

However, Worthington came back with three unanswered goals of its own to tie the game heading into the first intermission.

"The kids responded well in the first period after we went down by three goals," WHS coach Nate Grimmius said. "It would have been pretty easy for them to put their heads down and give up when they were down three. But we fought back to tie it before the end of the period."

Scoring for the Trojans in the first were Andrew Johnson, Nick Newman and Nathan Patten.

The score remained tied until the Cardinals' Niko Berge put the puck past Trojan goalie Rylan Scholtes 6 minutes, 19 seconds into the second to give Redwood Valley a 4-3 lead.

Worthington evened things up again on a goal by Levi Leach halfway through the third period to force overtime.

Kretsch's game-winning, power-play goal came 1 minute, 28 seconds into the overtime period on a 5-on-3 for Redwood Valley.

Scholtes faced 46 shot on the night, saving 41 through the four frames. The Trojans put 30 shots on Cardinal goalie Jordan Houle in the game.

Worthington (3-14, 0-10) hosts Sioux Falls today at 7 p.m. in its last game of the regular season.

FAIRMONT -- Travis Janssen topped 100 career points with three goals and four assists in the Windom Area Eagles' 9-0 Thursday night drubbing of the Fairmont Cardinals in a non-conference boys hockey game.

Janssen, who has 59 points on the season with 35 goals and 24 assists, scored twice in the second period and added the Eagles' final goal in the third frame. His assists came on the Eagles' first goal of each respective period -- helping Zach Bartosh to open the first and second periods and Kyle Luhmann to begin the third.

Along with his two goals, Bartosh assisted on a pair of goals to finish with four points by teaming with Alex Leopold (two assists) to help Devin Nielsen score the second Eagles' goal and aiding Janssen's first goal -- a short-handed marker.

Luhmann finished with two goals with his first coming midway through the first period, assisted by Mitchell Macek and Stuart Schumacher (two assists).

Zach Ignaszewski scored Windom Area's other goal, making it 7-0 late in the second period on a Tyler Presthus assist.

Ben Stubbe earned the shutout for the Eagles, stopping all 17 shots he faced. Colton Cunning suffered the loss for Fairmont, making 28 saves on 37 chances.

Windom Area improved to 12-9-0 overall with the win. The Eagles (5-4 Southwest Conference) travel to play Redwood Valley in their final regular season game Tuesday.
