TROJAN GIRLS BASKETBALL: Springfield outlasts Worthington in first round of St. James Tournament

ST. JAMES -- Paige Gravenhof led Worthington with 20 points during the Trojans' 58-55 loss to Springfield in a semifinal game at the St. James Holiday Tournament on Thursday.

Gravenhof scored 16 points during the first 18 minutes, but Worthington trailed 34-26 at halftime.

"Paige shot the ball consistently and that is a good sign," Worthington coach Eric Lindner said.

Jordan Salonek countered with 14 first-half points en route to scoring a game-high 23 markers for the Tigers.

"We missed eight layups in the first minute and a half, our defense gave up too many baseline drives and we were outrebounded," Lindner said.

Lydia Kemper provided 12 points for Worthington, which is 6-2 overall this season. K.C. Riley contributed nine more.

Worthington, which outscored Springfield 12-3 from behind the arc, received a trio of 3-pointers from Gravenhof.

Megan Pierson added 13 points for the Tigers (5-4 overall) and Kasey Kretsch chipped in 12 more.

Worthington plays tournament host St. James (1-6) at 6 p.m. today in the third-place game. Springfield meets Rockford at 7:30 p.m. today in the championship contest.

Rockford (3-6) routed St. James 57-32 in the other semifinal game Thursday.

JCC 80, MVL 77

ST. CLAIR -- Lydia Brandt score 17 of her team-leading 21 points in the second half to power the Jackson County Central Huskies past Minnesota Valley Lutheran 80-77 in the first round of the girls basketball tournament in St. Clair.

MVL tied the game at 77 with 20 seconds left, but a basket and a made free-throw by Brandt gave JCC an 80-77 edge.

The Huskies outrebounded MVL 47-32, while forcing 16 second half turnovers.

Kaylee Burmeister was second on the team in scoring with 19 points and seven rebounds to go along with 14 points by Rachel Johnson. Michelle Van Epps had seven points and 10 rebounds in the game, while Marita Rasche had nine points and nine rebounds.

Anna Munsen led MVL with 14 points.

JCC advances to the semi-finals with the win and will face United South Central today.

MOUNTAIN LAKE -- Three Mountain Lake Area players scored in double figures as the Wolverines defeated Westbrook-Walnut Grove in the semifinals of the Mountain Lake Area Holiday Tournament on Thursday.

Janessa Peters topped the Wolverines (5-2 overall) with 12 points, while Whitney Klassen had 11 more and Mikayla Falk added 10.

Mountain Lake Area led 28-24 at halftime before outscoring Westbrook-Walnut Grove 32-23 in the second half.

Paige Erickson paced the Chargers (3-5 overall) with 14 points and nine rebounds. Abby Herding added 11 points and Kelsi Wahl produced 10 points and five rebounds. Elizabeth Woelber collected six rebounds, while Kaylee Mischke pulled down five more.

Westbrook-Walnut Grove takes on Truman in the third-place game at 6 p.m. today. Mountain Lake battles Ellsworth in the championship contest at 7:30 p.m. today.

Ellsworth advanced to the title game with a 62-28 victory over Truman in the other semifinal game Thursday.

MOUNTAIN LAKE -- Amber Walkowaik had a team-high 22 points, six steals and four assists for the Ellsworth Panthers in a blowout of Truman at the Mountain Lake Area Girls Holiday Tournament Thursday.

The Panthers led by 19 at halftime and did not allow any Truman player to score more than eight points in the game.

Bridget Kramer had 20 points for Ellsworth, while Hannah Mulder picked up 10 rebounds.

Brooke McDonald led Truman with eight points.

The Panthers face off with the Mountain Lake Area Wolverines in the championship game today.
