TROJAN GIRLS BASKETBALL: Trojans fall to Warriors
MARSHALL -- Bird Island-Olivia-Lake Lillian District (BOLD) used a second-half comeback to advance to its first MSHSL Girls Basketball Class AA State Tournament after defeating Worthington 66-64 on Friday at Southwest Minnesota State University's R/A Facilty.
The Warriors (26-3) trailed 34-27 at halftime, but scored the first eight points of the second half to grab a 35-34 lead. The Trojans responded with an 8-0 run to regain a 42-35 advantage, but BOLD rallied during the final 4 minutes to seal the MSHSL Class AA Section 3 Tournament championship.
"This was a great game by both teams," Warriors head coach Brian Kingery said. "This was just a hard-fought game that went up-and-down with a lot of energy. Even thought this is a great victory for us, Worthington played a good game and they were a tough team."
The Trojans held a 56-52 edge as 4 1/2 minutes remained.
Ana Boever, who topped all scorers and rebounders with 20 points and 12 boards, drained two consecutive top-of-the-key 3-pointers on back-to-back Worthington possessions. Then, she added two free throws the next time the Trojans had the ball.
But BOLD scored the next seven points behind Carly Sigurdson, Bailey Kubesh and Taylor Ebnet.
Sigurdson putback a rebound before converting an old-fashioned 3-point play before Kubush scored a layup in transistion. After a Worthington turnover, Ebnet, who was fouled while attempting a layup, went to the free-throw line to convert a pair of shots.
"It's tough to say what the difference was in this game," Kingery said. "I think we got some key turnovers that led to some key buckets and our girls were really resiliant, even though were down by seven points a few times in the game."
The Warriors committed 19 turnovers and forced the Trojans into making 26 miscues.
Down 59-56 with 3 minutes left, Worthington had to play catchup the rest of the way. Without any field goals in that span, the Trojans scored their final eight points at the free-throw line.
Meanwhile, BOLD was able to seal its victory on a nifty pass-play from Ebnet to Maggie Nagel, whose deflection at the free-throw line found Mallarie Steffel wide open for a back door layup for a 63-60 edge. Then, Ebnet and Sigurdson combined to hit a trio of free throws in the final minute.
At the end of the first half, everything was going Worthington's way.
"We got (BOLD) to drop back its pressure and I thought we were doing a good job of it," Trojans head coach Eric Lindner said. "The biggest thing with pressure is that you have to pass. If you get trigger-happy, that's when you have problems. If you go to the sidelines, you have to give players space to catch. The passes that were going down the sidelines were too close to being out of bounds."
Erica Linder (eight points) came off the Worthington bench to lift the Trojans in the first 18 minutes. She converted two 3-point plays on two straight WHS possessions to tie the game at 21.
Linder sparked the Trojans, who used a 13-6 run to close the first half and take a 34-27 lead at the intermission.
Abby Landgaard (12 points) delivered a pair of baskets during the surge before Boever and Paige Gravenhof (six points) lifted Worthington with layups and Brooke Henning knocked down an 8-foot jumper.
Leading 34-27 to start the second half, Worthington missed an opportunity to increase its lead.
"The first 4 minutes of the second half were crucial and we didn't execute," Lindner said. "That was critical because it became a one-possession game."
