TROJAN GOLF: Trojan girl golfers top Luverne; Card boys win
LUVERNE -- Kate Lesnar shot a 40 to lead the Worthington Trojan girls' golf team to a win over the Luverne Cardinals Tuesday.
The Luverne boys' team defeated the Trojans by three points to get the conference win.
"We were a little flat today and I'm not really sure what was going on," WHS coach Ron Wood said. "But the girls woke up at the end and finished strong to get the win."
The Worthington girls shot a 188 as a team, while Luverne finished with a 210 team score.
"We always say that if we can get three of the girls to shoot in the 40s every meet we will be in a good position to win," Wood said. "We have been able to do that in every meet so far and that's great."
McKenzie Hurley finished second for the Trojans after shooting a 46, followed by Morgan Harberts who shot a 49 on the day. Tyree Murray and Genna Putnam tied for fourth for Worthington with each golfer finishing with a 53. Kia Veen hit a 59 to round out the Trojans varsity golfers.
"I'm pleased with our numbers today," Wood said. "But I think part of why we were not on our game was because this was our first meet away from home and it can be hard to adjust to that."
The Worthington boys finished with a 176 on the day, three points behind Luverne's low score of 173.
"It was not out best match on the men's side," Wood said. "We didn't shoot very well and we had a lot of costly mistakes on multiple holes."
The low medalist was Luverne's Matthew Sterrett who shot a 40.
Worthington was led by Seth Meier (43) and Alex Kremer (43), followed by Will Mulder (45), Jacob Woll (45) Zach Heidebrink (47) and Jacob Weg (47).
