TROJAN GYMNASTICS: Trojans defeat Cardinals
LUVERNE -- The Trojans gymnastics team placed four girls in the all-around standings on their way to scoring a season-high 137.65 points in a win over the Luverne Cardinals Friday.
The Cardinals scored a 129.025 to take second place and only placed one gymnast in the top four of the four events during the competition.
Paige Kinley took first place in three events and finished with 35.7 points to claim first in the all-around. Maria Contreras took second with a 34.35, while Anna Koepsell placed third with a final score of 33.75. Whitney Jensen rounded out the top four in the all-around with a 32.025 for the Trojans.
"It was an awesome night for everybody," Trojan coach Joni Reitmeier said. "We were hitting our spots on every routine."
Kinley started off the night taking first place in the vault with a 9.3, followed by Maria Contreras in second place with a 9.225 and Liz Hayenga in fourth with a 9.125.
Kinley also took first in the bars, scoring an 8.7 in the event. Stephanie Jaycox scored a 7.95, which was good enough for second, while Koepsell and Contreras shared third place with a 7.8.
Koepsell finished in first on the beam with an 8.675 followed by Contreras in second place with an 8.525. Kinley placed third, scoring an 8.5.
"We did really awesome today, but we had a few more falls on the beam than I would like to see," Reitmeier said. "We need to get rid of those falls."
Kinley claimed her third first-place finish on the floor with a score of 9.25. Jensen took second with a 9.125, while Contreras and Koepsell came in tied for third with an 8.825.
The Trojan JV team also won in Luverne with a final score of 115.8.
Worthington travels to Pipestone to face the Arrows Friday.
