TROJAN SOFTBALL: Arrows sweep Trojans
PIPESTONE -- The Pipestone Arrow girls' softball team picked up a two-game sweep of the Worthington Trojans Friday.
"We ran into a couple innings where we just couldn't get them off the bases," WHS coach Josh Wasmund said. "Pipestone Area capitalized on their chances when we gave them the opportunities."
The Arrows knocked in two runs in the first inning on the Trojans, then scored three more in the second to take a 5-0 lead. In the third, Pipestone Area added two more runs to its total along with another three runs in the fourth to make it 10-0 after four innings. Worthington was unable to score in the top of the fifth to keep the game going.
"The Arrows had a lot of good hitting on their part, so you have to give them credit for that," Wasmund said. "We did a pretty good job of keeping them from scoring a ton in a single inning though."
Sarah Ebbers pitched all four innings for the Trojans, giving up 10 hits and one walk. Valerie Cano picked up two hits in the game, while Betsy Thompson went 1-for-3.
Kelly Nettik went five innings for Pipestone Area, with eight strikeouts and gave up just three hits. Paige Peterson was 2-for-3 at the plate with a two-run home run in the first and a double.
In Game 2, the Arrows once again ended the game early with an 11-run fifth inning to win 24-4.
"The big innings for the Arrows really hurt us in the second game," Wasmund said. "But we were able to finally get some hits and score some runs in Game 2."
Pipestone Area scored seven runs in the first to take a 7-0 lead, then picked up back-to-back three-run innings in the second and third to make it 13-0. But Worthington got on the board in the bottom of the third with a run of its own and added three more runs in the fourth to make it 13-4.
But the Arrows exploded for 11 runs in the fifth to end the game early.
Worthington (1-3) hosts Adrian Monday, while Pipestone Area (4-0) hosts Brandon Valley Monday.
