Trojans defeat Arrows in home finale

WORTHINGTON -- Heading into the floor exercise Friday night, the Worthington gymnastics team was ahead of Pipestone Area by half a point.

With solid performances from Taylor Erwin (9.3), Lynn Harberts (8.725), Dena Leach (8.65) and Tara Svalland (8.55), the Trojans pulled away from the Arrows for a 132.525-129.80 victory in their home finale.

"As I've said many times, the floor exercise is the team's favorite event," Worthington head coach Shelly Eklund said following the meet. "The girls really shined on floor tonight, after running into difficulty on the vault and beam."

Erwin's 9.3 on the floor was good enough to claim first place, as was her 8.65 on the bars -- helping the sophomore earn the all-around title.

The Trojans had the top finisher in three of the four events on the night, as Lynn Harberts captured first place on the beam with a score of 8.25. Harberts also placed second on the floor (8.725).

Leach placed in 3-of-4 events, taking third on both the bars (8.225) and floor (8.65), and coming in fourth on the vault to claim third place in the all-around competition.

Pipestone Area's Amber Haupert was the top gymnast for the Arrows, as the freshman placed second on the beam (8.15), the vault (9.0) and the bars (8.225) -- helping her finish second to Erwin in the all-around competition.

Courtnie Evans was the only Arrow gymnast to win an event, earning a 9.175 on the vault to claim the gold. Teammate Katie Garcia posted a score of 8.95 on the vault to help the Arrows go 1-2-3 in the event.

Other top finishers for the Arrows included Nicole Wiese with a third-place finish on the beam (7.975) and Shanda Bogstad with a fourth-place finish on the bars (8.15).

"We started out very strong on the vault tonight," PA head coach Warren Bailey said. "Bars is usually pretty good, but we had a couple of girls miss some routines.

"It was still pretty close going into the final event," Bailey added. "But I knew they had good floor routines, and that was the deciding factor tonight."
