Worthington Minnesota 300 11th Street / P.O. Box 639 56187

SHERBURN -- Despite scoring a season best 132.8 points Tuesday, the Worthington Trojans gymnastics team fell less than two points short of victory against the Martin County Area Magic.

"Even though we didn't win, we scored a season high in points and that is a good thing," Trojan coach Joni Reitmeier said.

The Magic scored a 134.275 as a team to take first place, while the Trojans finished with a score of 132.8.

Paige Kinley led Worthington in almost every event and took second in the all-around scoring with 35.475 points. Maria Contreras took third after scoring 32.6 points in the meet, while Liz Hayenga took fourth with a 31.45.

The bars turned out to be the best event for the Trojans on the day with Kinley taking second (8.75 points), Contreras placing third (7.7) and Stephanie Jaycox finishing fourth (7.65).

Worthington took second and third once again on the balance beam against Martin County Area. Kinley placed second with an 8.875 and Hayenga finished third with an 8.5.

"Good things happened for us today in most of the events," Reitmeier said. "The girls did a better job of staying on the beam and we did well on the bars. But we slipped a little on the floor exercise, which is usually one of our better events."

Anna Koepsell took second on the floor (8.925 points) while Kinley placed third (8.75) for Worthington.

The vault was the only event where the Trojans didn't take second in the meet. Kinley finished third with 9.1 points and Contreras took fourth with 8.8 points.

"We did well tonight and we hope we can come back Thursday against Windom/Mountain Lake and get a conference win," Reitmeier said.

The Trojans host the Windom/Mountain Lake Cobras Thursday in Worthington.
