VFW baseball: Pipestone takes two from Worthington
EDGERTON — Errors continued to plague the Worthington VFW baseball team Wednesday as it was outscored 16-0 in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Pipestone.
In the opener, Pipestone scored four unearned runs on its way to a 7-0 victory. That was followed by a 9-0, four-inning loss for Worthington in which three extra runs came home because of miscues.
In the opener, the two teams were locked in a pitcher’s duel until the home half of the fourth when Pipestone broke through with a single run. Errors opened the door to back-to-back three, run innings in the fifth and sixth to help Pipestone put it away.
Easton Sauerbrei took the loss for Worthington. He went all seven and allowed three earned runs on five hits, struck out five and walked three.
Sauerbrei, Brandon Veen and King Blanchette had a single each as Worthington finished the game with three hits.
The nightcap ended after just four innings due to darkness as Edgerton’s field — where the game was moved due to wet conditions in Pipestone — doesn’t have lights.
It was just as well for Worthington.
Pipestone scored two in the first before adding five in the second. Two more in the third brought the game to its final as Worthington again struggled to figure things out at the plate.
Veen allowed seven runs on two hits in one-plus inning of work to take the loss for Worthington. Blanchette was 2-for-2 at the plate with Nate Russell and Sauerbrei finishing at a single apiece.
Worthington (5-7 overall, 1-1 district) will try to get back on track in a doubleheader at 6 p.m. tonight in Marshall against Marshall Blue.
