VFW Baseball: Worthington dominates Slayton
WILMONT -- Nate Russell was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, picking up three RBIs and scoring three runs to lead the Worthington VFW baseball team to a 16-1 win over Slayton Monday.
"We talked about tightening up our game at our last practice and also doing the small things," VFW coach T.D. Hostikka said. "We were able to do that tonight and that is why we were able to get back to our winning ways tonight."
Worthington jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning and piled on another eight runs in the second to take a commanding 13-0 lead. After adding two more runs in the third, Worthington increased its lead to 16 with a run in the fourth.
"We had to get back to doing the little things well and we were able to do that today," Hostikka said. "We worked on hitting the ball up the middle in practice and I think we were able to knock six balls right up the middle in the game."
Nate Braaksma pitched the first two innings to get the win, striking out two batters while allowing zero runs and no hits.
Luke Drooger and Roque Soto combined to pitch the final three innings, with Soto allowing the only run of the game for Slayton in the fifth.
Logan Thuringer picked up two RBIs on two hits for Worthington, while Trevor Weitzma was 3-for-4 at the plate, knocking in a run on two singles and a double.
Worthington (17-11, 7-3) takes part in the Alexandria VFW Tournament starting Friday when it faces Fridley at 6 p.m. and then takes on Alexandria No. 1 at 8 p.m.
