VFW baseball: Worthington to host first postseason game
ALEXANDRIA -- The Worthington VFW baseball team split a pair of games to the start of its tournament in Alexandria on Friday, beating Fridley 7-6 and losing to Alexandria 9-1.
In the Fridley victory, Worthington needed two runs in the seventh inning to tie, but got four. Roque Soto led off with a walk and later scored. Trevor Wietzma singled and later scored. Nate Russell doubled and Nate Braaksma walked, both of them also scoring.
Russell, who was the winning pitcher, was 4-for-7 over the two games. He scored twice, stole two bases and drove in two runs.
Worthington is the No. 4 seed in the upcoming post-season tournament and will host its first game Thursday at 6 p.m. in Wilmont against an as-yet unnamed opponent.
